Well my first problem is going from drive to revearse, lets say I have been driving then throw it into revearse to paralell park, when I throw it into revearse the whole car jolts and makes a loud metal bangin into metal noise, and instead of makin 2 threads I am also having trouble on the 2-3 shift, some times it will slip badly and the rpm willgo way up then drop into third, this ussually only happens when going up a hill or the load from wot. Is the trans dying on me?

Sounds like you may have broken mounts and a trans that is going bad.

yep my wonderful automatic does the exact same thing, it jolts forward and sometimes makes a clank noise when it goes into gear. I'm hoping it is related to the loose trans/motor mount.

hey john, what does going bad mean? How long does it take to go bad? Will a shift kit fix it, or does it just plain need to be rebuilt?

Going bad=needs to be rebuilt or replaced. As far as how long it takes to get worse- it's anyone's guess.

It is usually better to take care of problems early on rather than to wait until the car stops moving. Just my .02

it's occasional in the sense that it's happened twice, I guess I will let it go til it gets worse for now. If I sent yuou a core trans, how n=much would it be for you to send me out a new one? Not like a full race one, but good enough for 400hp at the crank or so.

i too have that clamping sound when i shift from drive to reverse or vise versa. not very loud but noticable. what is that?.. does that mean something is wrong? is it serious enough to worry about. ?

I have a loud clang/cluck when i shift from R to D or vise versa. In my case its just a bad carrier bearing or the mounting around it which is easy to fix with black silicon.

I just did a tranny rebuild, alto end clutches and a translab shift kit 260 miles ago and mine is doing the same thing. I'm having a lot of problems with the car ever since I got it back from slowboy 260 miles ago, and the fact that I spent 14K isn't easing my worries either.

Let me know what was wrong if you get it fixed. Thanks in advance.

Well you should always check the normal things. Trans mounts and universal joints.

Both of you guys sound like you are having carrier bearing problems though. Please read the faq at the fallowing links to and see if this sounds like whats going on with you're DSM's.

As I stated before I've got the same problem with my car. I know for a fact in MY case this is the issue. I've put my car up in the air and checked my carrier bearings.

I've also helped my friend fix this on his car. Same issue and that fix works. Alot of people have to do it, very common problem.

Just get down on the ground and give you're drive shaft a few hard yanks near the carrier bearing. If it feels sorta sloppy then read those links. Heck read them anyway.

Does this problem occur on FWD cars. My 99 eclipse gs-t has the clanking but the faqs listed above seem to be for awd? Are there carrier bearings for fwd?

Thanks

The only thing with my automatic is that when i put it in drive or reverse it kinda jumps if u will. I dont really see it as a problem its just like it shifts to that gear quickly. In my lil beater car i can roll back in reverse slide it into drive and it will slow the car down. I know thats not good to do but its a beater car. Maybe im just not used to an Automatic dsm. Im paranoid sometimes when it comes to my eclipse.

OMG, i agree, my eclipse cannot be even remotely moving, otherwise it will jump, there is noooo give in the tranny!

Most likely the motor mounts or the carrier bearings, that's why upon my trans rebuild, I went with prothanes. Also, what is everyone's idle at in P when they shift.

The automatic shifter line is located right belew the intake pipe. Check and make sure your intake box isnt hanging low and hitting the lines, thats what happened when the lines were hitting the hard intake pipe in my car.

Is there a easy way to check if the motor mounts are bad or loose?

Thanks
Get under the car and shine a light on them. Usually the front one goes bad first.
