I have a 92 1G NT AT. I have read the 1G TCU guide and I'm not sure if mine is a typical situation or not.
I had a trans fluid leak a month ago, so my mechanic did a filter and fluid change, cleaned solenoids...also found two bolts that mounts the trans to the block missing. Everything worked great.
Couple weeks later I had the rear main seal changed due to serious oil leak. It was leaking before the trans leak, but waited for my tax money.
After the rear main seal change, it never felt right again. From a dead stop accelerating there was a bad vibration from the trans area up to about 15mph. After that it was smooth and NO rough shifts.
Mechanic looked at it and said I needed a trans mount because it's so old and worn.
Ok, well before I could get it, one day I lost 4th gear. Would shift through to 3rd, then open rev as if in neutral. I made it back to the shop, but now I don't have reverse either, and my mechanic seems stuck on the problem. The check engine light wasn't on at first, but now in his care it is, and it's throwing codes for solenoid issues. He said Friday he was going to take out the solenoids and check them and go from there.
Does this sound like a TCU gone bad,...or a tranny? It was shifting smooth so I don't think it's mechanical, but it just seems too coincedental that this happened right after main seal change. :banghead:
Please help! I love these forums. You guys have helped me so much... Thanks!

i wouldnt let your mechanic keep playing with it. he should know what it is and if you think its a tcu get one and change it out. i wouldnt let someone just play around with my tranny and go down the "list" money adds up quick that way and still have issues.

Agreed. I am getting very annoyed at how long he has had my car now. He says that he is trying to make sure what the problem is instead of throwing parts at it and wasting money. That's well and good, but I want my car back.

We will see what he says Monday. I've been comtemplating taking it somewhere else if he keeps jackin me around.

You guys know anyone who has a TCU I could buy? I don't see any in the classifieds. All I can find online is to send yours in to be rebuilt for around $260. Is that reasonable?

Thanks for your help guys.

Thank you for the info Bud92GSX. I will be looking into doing this depending on what I find out Monday. Thanks.

260$ F*** NO.Somebodys gotta have one laying around, I feel bad for this guy. They can't be charging that much thats crazy.I Know a guy who took his to the shop. They replaced the tcu 2 or 3 times witht a"rebuilt one" The rebuilt ones were just as junk as his broken one.Soo theres that.

look up miller imports on google and call him! he is in north carolina and he might have one or at least i know he can put you in the right direction. a used tcu shouldnt be more then 60 bucks i would think. you only want to see if it fixes the problem so no point to rebuild one untill you find out.

Thank you for the eye opening response! I emailed Miller Imports, so maybe they will get back with me tomorrow. I also found a bunch on car-part.com, ranging from $50-$100, and some way higher. That will be my next venture I'm guessing. I really hope that's all I need. That's a LOT more affordable than getting a used tranny and installing it.

Check out my pics. I've put a lot of love into my car, and done a lot of engine maintenance. I'm not ready to let it go just yet.

Text miller for a faster resonse. He should have what you need.;)
Well, my mechanic said he has checked everything and he believes it's the TCU. He said he puts the scanner on the car and it only sends back all 1's, which he says isn't even a valid code reading, so the TCU is out.
I found one used and ordered it today, $50, yay! Miller did txt me back, but he didn't have the right model. Car-part.com is where I found one.
Please let this be the solution!!!!
