Trying to help my sister out with her 95GST that she just bought. For half of the first day with it the car shifted through all gears. NOW it bangs into reverse. When driving, it is sluggish starting off but once you hit between 20-30mph it seems like it is running where it should. (we think it is stuck in 3rd gear) We tried shifting it manually.... no change. Any ideas on what it could possibly be?

Well, after just a few hours of researching and looking...... we figured it out. We did just what anyone else would do and hooked it up to have the codes read.... well when we did that it wouldn't read. It said "no communication", which made us think that the TCU was bad. OR the was a fuse that was bad.

checking the fuse box under the dash we found that there were 5 fuses that were missing. One of those fuses is for the automatic transmission module are there... space #15... PROBLEM SOLVED. Car shifts beautifully.

So for anyone with this problem CHECK THE FUSES!!! We never thought to go for the fuse box.
You are the unfortunate recipient of "limp mode." the transmission stays in third gear as a failsafe. you need to pull the codes which can be done with a voltmeter. Do a search for pulling transmission codes, I don't remember which pins to tap off of. It's a simple process. I have a feeling that it may be the solenoids within the transmission itself, one or many may be staying open/closed. Check the wiring going into the transmission itself, as if any of the wires going to the valve body are split it won't be getting it's signal and producing this.
