So i bought a 91 eagle talon that need a tcu supposedly so i bought a known to be good one put it in and it shifted fine for 10 mins or so. Then back to square one it sticks in either second or third. if you shut the car off and restart it its fine for an other 10 mins then no shift. I changed the filter and fluid not that made and difference either way good or bad. Any one got any ideas on what i could be.:hmm:

how would i check the solenoids?? where are they located? How do i fix vavle body issues or is it some thing you send out to have fixed type deal

The valve body is what controls it all... When you drop the pan and remove the filter, the valve body is looking right at you. Its full of springs orings and ball bearings.
Lets say this.. I ruined 2 (trash trannys) trying to learn to rebuild them, But I was also 19 at the time and had very little experience with that kid of work.

The solenoids can stick with out reason.. But its generally do to dirt or metal shavings getting into them... Think of them as electric pistons, that open and close a port at a certain time.

You can tear the VB apart, clean it and hope for the best. Buy a new VB or try one out of a used junkyard tranny (probly 100x easyer to just do a tranny swap).

You can also just try and have it flushed. But I doubt it will fix the problem.

This is kinda weird. Yours makes the 3rd tranny in a month that I have heard going out do to solenoid problems.

You could start by taking an ohm reading of the solenoids indirectly... This will at least test the static condition of the solenoids themselves. -Try it first cold, then again, after it does it's thing after '10 minutes'.

W4A33:

Find the 4 pin plug (with only three wires in it) on the top of the trans. Unplug it. Ohm-test each of the wires (tranny side) to the battery ground terminal... If you get any large variance in any of the three wires, you've found that a bad solenoid and/or you have a grounding problem.

After that, have you tried pulling any A\T codes?

Good Luck

This is called limp mode. Have you done any work to the car recently? I have the same problem currently. I believe its because i have a little extra tranny fluid and it is ready wrong. Search on here for LIMP MODE. See if any of that helps.

so im going to try and search to find a diagram and drawing any thing to help with taking the valve body out of the car that and apart. only because i dont wana mess it up, but if some ones got a link or any info that will help it would be very much appreciated. thanks for the help so far i havent been on here in almost a year.

Well, I have to say, that your problem is not your solenoids, and your TCU. The reason I say that is because my 1g had the very same problem. I bought my 1g from a guy in a small town, and the car was stuck in 3rd gear. He didn't know about the TCU. The transmission shop rebuilt the transmission and the same problem occured. I bought the car for $500, went to the junk yard, and bought the right TCU, and I haven't looked back.:hellyeah::hellyeah:

tcu is known to be good from a reliable source? The one in the car (original 91 talon fwd na tcu) did nothing meaning nothing but 3rd gear driving park revers and neutral. Same as the second which was not known to be good bought it for 20 bucks of of some guy had the same results( it was a 91 talon fwd turbo tcu) this one works just keeps going in to limp mode every 10 mins

Keep in mind, the TCU has to match. If you have a turbo automatic, you can put in a non turbo TCU. The shift points are different. An awd and fwd turbo tcu will work. Their shift points are the same. If you have the original TCU, take off the cover, and you're bound to see a leaking capacitor

Capacitors are like the ecus and are prone to failure. It could be on its way out and causing intermittent problems. If its good for awhile then acts up. shut the car off and start back up, its good again for a bit. it sounds like an electrical/computer thing.
Also the ohm reading on the solenoids are different for 90-91/2 and 93-94. It has to be the correct matching tcu

I had the same exact problem, and for me it ended up being the solenoids. I just sent out my valve body and solenoids to IPT to have them do their magic.

It is possible its the solenoids. He has a 1g which is much more prone to tcu failure than a 2g

well im picking up an auto fwd turbo tranny for 100 bucks we will see how it works after that

I would recommend actually solving the problem instead of part swapping. Check the solenoids, test tcu and check for worn board, etc. Swapping trannies is a lot of work just to keep having problems.

well heres what i am going to do.
1. try changing the valve body with one out of the other tranny because i got 2 instead of one.
2. if that dosnt fix it and its the tranny itself or some thing goes wrong i swap the other good tranny in leaving me two trannys to take apart and make one good one just cause i want too. wish me luck and if some one can find me a diagram or walk through for removing the valve body thanks.

wow valve body removal isnt that hard and to who ever said to use cardboard and map every thing out thanks its better than a Haynes manual. all i need is torque specs and a bigger garage

so i figured since i have tree auto trannys in front of me i would take the valve body out of one. i also figured since the one in the car was the one that didnt work i would rip it apart, clean it and see if i could put it all back together. It really wasnt that bad at all just got to take your time and pay attention to where the little balls and the spring came from. If it wasnt raining i could try it and see if it worked.

if it works im going to do it to the other one i have out already and may be take pics to show other people how to do it. what do you guys think, should i?

hey i have a 95 talon TSI. mines doing the same thing well similar. shifts fine for about 5 - 10 minutes, then bam slips and doesnt like to shift right. cut the car off let it cool down and start it and it does fine for about 10 more minutes. let me know what you find out about your problem. i need to get my car back on the road asap. im going to try the quick fix lucas trans crap tomorrow as one of the other guys suggested.

My car did the EXACT same thing when I bought it. I could reset the battery and start it up again and it would work till the tranny started getting a little warm. I took it to a shop to have them test it and they said everything was fine with the transmission. They charged me $75 just to tell me that :( On my way back home, it did the same thing again. I did not have the time or money to wait for a TCU to come in so i got a shift box. It cured all my problems! I still drive with it to this day. The TCU was defiantly the culprit. I would highly recommend to get a new TCU or another device to shift your transmission before you go tearing down your transmission!

I would like to note that I use the 100% line pressure mod via the power/eco switch. I did this after my tranny was suddenly having shifting issues. I spent maybe $30 to see if it would work. Its been fine for 5k miles (it does shift hard though and fast) My tranny will not even shift under normal operation, but my tcu does not give codes and tests that its alive via multimeter. I have never tried a different tcu, but i think thats my issue. I wouldnt be so quick to start ripping the tranny apart, etc its a lot of work to not be sure of the problem. These tcu's are finicky!
If you plan on racing and modding your car and have the auto tranny. I highly recommend either eagletalontim's Roadsurge shiftbox or another 100% line pressure mod. The roadsurge box is nice though because you dont need to use a tcu!

no not trying to buikd this car or race it trying to fix drive it and sell it i got it cheap so $$ is all i see

this tcu is good its gotta be the solenoids or grounding and as far as tearing stuff apart i got two other trannies im just pulling stuff apart cause im board.
