AUTO Tranny Problems

Hi there i just bought a 1991 Eclipse GSX AUTO and on my way home the car does not shift gears its always in drive i tried to put the shifter in 1 and nothing at all happened please can anyone help me i know about this cars but dont know nothing about auto trannys.

Its probably your tcu it controls the shift silonieds in the tranny . It is located on the passenger side of the car buy the door . Make sure it is plugged in well and search the tranny out side and see if the electronics are all hooked up.

Sounds like the tranny went into safe mode from your description. Check the fluid and all the electrical connection to see if there is a problem there. If they check out ok and it still won't shift, remove the TCU and open it up. One of the capacitors could be getting ready to go out. I had this problem on my '92 Laser and I had to get a "new" TCU from the junkyard.

I have the same problem in my 91 GSX to you put it in drive and it wont shift and then u try and put it in 1st ans second and it dosent do anything. mine is like stuck in second gear i start off realy slow the once i get past 3000rpms it starts picking up...everyone told me it was time for a rebuild.

Mine did that right before it blew in my 91 laser FWD. It was stuck in drive and then when it finally did go, I have nothing but neutral no matter what I put it in. I'm getting a new tranny today though.

if you can still drive the car but it doesn't shift gears the trans is most likely in "limp mode" as stated above. it will usually only use 2nd and reverse gears. when this occurs it is usually an electrical problem in the tcu. do you smell burnt trans fluid while driving? that is often a sign of a shot trans. also do you notice any trans fluid being pushed out of the vents on top of the trans?

nope it does not have any fluid smell or seems to be overflowing.
