Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

I had gotten the P0505 code a couple of times and then searched the forums for a solution. It appears that the ISC could be causing the code, so I ordered a new one from dsmisc.com.

Today I started the swap. Problems. My existing ISC is held on by 3 screws. The new one has only 2. I went ahead and removed the ISC anyway, and when I did, it didn't come out all in 1 piece. The center axle/cylinder remained in the port.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I have attached a pic of the existing ISC and the new one. Do I have to pull the axle/cylinder part out of the throttle body using a pliers or something? FYI - I kinda tried this already. I didn't want to pull too hard or crush anything so I didn't give much of an effort. It didn't feel like it would come out very easily. Plus, A small washer type thing fell off the end of the axle when I did. I put it back on and re-installed the original isc.

I should have taken pics while I had the ISC off, but I didn't.

I have a 1997 TSi AWD Turbo with a 6 bolt swap.

You removed the wrong screws, those 3 screws hold the 2 halves of the ISC together. You need to remove the 2 screws that are located closer to the TB itself (they go through the metal portion of the ISC to the TB, use the new one to see where the 2 screws are).

The one they sent you is the newer style which should work fine but is put together slightly different. It is all dark plastic and the 2 halves are held together by 2 screws that screw in from the TB side towards the electrical connector side. The older style has a metal half and light colored plastic half that are held together by 3 screws that go from the electrical connector side towards the TB side. Hope that makes sense.

If you can't see the top screw then you may have to remove your TB elbow.

^^^^Yup, thats right. The older style had a seperable motor/housing setup while the new ones are one piece. You removed the 3 screws that hold the motor in the housing...so the housing is still attached to the TB. The two bolts holding the housing on are in the same location as the bolts on the new ISC. Not trying to :beatentodeath:...just trying to paraphase :thumb:

It's not terribly important, but for the sake of accuracy this is not true.:) Just to clarify for anyone that may read this, both styles of ISC have 2 halves that can be separated. As I mentioned, the older style has 3 screws holding it together, the newer style has 2 screws from the opposite side connecting the two halves. You can see them in this picture.

I took an ISC out of a 1g and popped it in my 2g; didn't work. The difference between the 1g and the 2g's ISC is that the 2g's ISC above can be split in two being held on by those 2 flat faced screws whereas the 1g can't be split and looks like a solid piece of jumbo jack.

Not to steal your thread but, I popped the 1g in my 2g and the RPM started fluctuating up and down; what happened there? And to let you guys know, I only tried it because a brand new ISC is 200 bucks at my local auto store and I wanted to try a junk yard one before give my arm for a new one.

The 1G and 2G ISC motors are interchangeable. The fact that the 1G ISC motor that you put on did not work most likely indicates that one or more of the coils are burned out. Use the link I gave you in the other thread to test it.

BTW, as I mentioned in my previous posts both 1G and 2G ISC's can be separated into two halves. If you look at your 1G ISC there are three screws on the battery side of it that holds the plastic half to the metal half. The 2G has 2 screws on the TB side like you said.

Thanks to everyone for the assistance.

I have now removed the original ISC and replaced it with the one from dsmisc.com. FYI - that sight offers only 1 ISC for both 1g and 2g, so that supports what's been posted about them being interchangeable.

What was throwing me off on the first attempt is that the original ISC is half metal. I only removed the plastic half. The new ISC is all black and plastic.

I will post a pick of the original ISC asap so that anyone else catching this thread can avoid the confusion I had.

The P0505 code has not come on since the replacement of the ISC, but the idle is at about 1100 with the idle set screw turned all the way in. I think it's supposed to be down near 800. We'll see if I get the dreaded CEL in the future I guess.

Thanks again.

Below is a pic of the original ISC. As you can see, part of it is metal and the same color as the part of the engine it's attached to. This is what lead to my confusion during the first attempt to replace it.

Newbie forum is right where I belong.

Thanks again for the help.
