My mechanic placed the engine at 1/2 TDC so that all the pistons were centered in the block. He then filled each cylinder with ATF and left it.

1 Week passed: no change in any cylinder's ATF volume
3 Weeks passed: one cylinder was down enough to see the piston,
while the other 3 cylinders remained full.

A leakdown test on the cold engine resulted in about 10%

Question is, are my chances for the engine burning oil too great to warrant putting the engine in the car?

whats the purpose of this? the rings arent expanded like they normally would because theyre cold.

I've heard of adding a quart of ATF to your engine oil to clean out the block, journals/bearings, rods and pistons and then have it drained. The ATF kills seals and whatnot as well as being controversial. Other than that, I have no idea..

Yeah the ring has no chance to seal proper when it is not at operating temp.

Run a compression check if they are all withing 10% of eachother your pretty good.

Most anytthiung above 130 warm will still run good.

The purpose of this is a "quick and dirty" way of predicting the ring's ability to hold pressure without bolting on a head.

If they leak the ATF (thinner than oil) rather quickly, then chances are your engine is crap.

hrmph, well ok i guess.... Wait, did you say quick? in your original post you said 3 weeks.

this atf "test" is lousy IMO. just put the motor together and do a compression test after you have properly broken in the motor.
