Are Hks 272 cams over kill for my 16g setup?

Im about to trade my friend some parts for his hks 272 intake/ exhaust cams, and wanted to know if its overkill for small 16g setup?

If you update cams you might as well do valve springs and headgasket and studs as well. Something to consider if you decide to go that route.

I was wondering the same thing cause I am getting an Evo3 16g but i have a completely built 6bolt withh 2g head motor. just need cams, cam gears, and intake manifold but all internals are aftermarket. my other question added to this one is whats the difference between 272/272 and 264/272 setup?

People have made less than 300whp on aftermarket cams, likewise, people have made well over 300whp on stock cams. That being said, they are a major power adder and can do a lot for your motor. To the OP, what are your goals for the car? USDMDSM, the difference is the duration, 264 cams open the valves for 264* of rotation, versus 272* of rotation. The more aggressive (higher lift/duration) the cam profile, the wider and longer the valves are open. Typically a more aggressive cams shift the powerband up higher. I can say from experience that 264/272 combo with an Evo III 16g is a lot of fun with a great torque curve, we netted 347whp/357tq on pump and 374whp/389tq on race gas on a Dynapack. That being said, going with 272s shouldn't be overkill, that setup might sacrifice some tq over the 264/272s but will almost definitely give you more top end. It would also definitely be the way to go if you have plans beyond a 16g. Cam gears are not necessarily needed, some companies like Kelford and HKS are typically right on spec and are more or less drop in cams, while others like BC more often need to be degreed to get them on spec. There was a thread on that a while ago that I'm too lazy to find now, but the info is out there.

Usually when people talk about 264/272 they mean 264 on the intake and 272 on the exhaust, that's what we ran. Thanks for the compliments!

I agree with kahl. 272 cams aren't overkill but you will sacrifice a bit of torque down low, if you want an efficient setup with good kick down low yet still maintain power up top the 264/272 would be perfect.

Not overkill, get them. If you're like the rest of us you'll upgrade from that small 16g and then you'll really take advantage of those cams.

USDMDSM, it depends on what you want. If you want a max effort 16g car and/or plan to go beyond the 16g in the foreseeable future, 272s for sure. If you want a fun street car with a beastly midrange and have no burning desire to eek out every last horse the 264/272s are a good choice. FWIW, going from a 16g to a 3052 we're switching out the 264 to a 272. Also, not all cam grinds are equal. There are some cam test results on this site if you look for them, some 272s will lose you more low end power than others.

BC272's on my setup seemed like they made gains everywhere. They did not change spoolup at all either. I wouldn't mind giving up a little torque for more top end though since torque is what breaks stuff.

I would suggest going full 272/272. In my experience, I did not notice any difference in spool or low end compared to stock, and top end has great gains. Plus, they allow for LOTS of room to grow. The 264 really isn't worth it.

I've got web 272/272 cams on a port matched head with 1mm stainless o/s valves, ti springs and retainers (w/ 3 angle valve jobs of course) and a 16g.

It's definetely a big shift in the powerband from stock cams/stock head. I used to see 20lbs by 3200.. now i see 20lbs around 3500-3750. (referring from 2nd gear street pulls) on 10.9AFRs and no timing adjustments.

The boost curve is non existent now. In 2nd @ wot it goes to 20 and usually spikes to 22 in the range of 35/600 to 3700 and a 7400shift to third lands me back into full boost.

If you want to make FULL use of 272cams you need to change out components to allow you to rev higher (springs, retainers, etc...) otherwise you're better off keeping the stockers in there IMO.

i would go with the kelford cams, they are by far the best. They make like 50 more hp than the other cams. I would post the link but im to lazy. Just google it they dynoed all the cams with the same setep and compared numbers.

I have a shot at a HKS 272 intake/exhaust pair for a really good price. Dont want to lose my low end and midrange though with my small 16G. Would a stock intake cam work with a HKS 272 exhaust grind? I could always throw the 272 intake on if I upgrade to a 50 trim or something.

i done that, bought some cams, then then thought might aswell do valves, then might aswell do the piston rings, then mights aswell get bigger pistons, then rods, i cant belive ive finally got it all together but 2weeks till its tuned
