Are engines supposed to melt pistons like this?

i took of my head to check if theres any reason why im smoking from my exhaust..
i noticed that theres oil in the the 3rd exhaust port as well as on top of the headgasket.
also i had a shop rebuild my motor with je forged pistons 8kmiles ago but they kinda dont look like it..and they are warped from the sides..

Looks like you definitely melted the pistons. Did you follow proper break-in procedure? Was the bore measured? I know that JE's are on the looser PTW clearance and tend to slap until warmed up. This doesn't really look like that was the issue though. More info on how you broke the engine in and the assembly process is needed.

Are those pistons actually missing material, or is that just poor picture quality. If they are chipped/melted, then you should take that back to the place that built it and ask for a refund! Unless of course you messed it up doing something you shouldn't have... like racing on a cold engine...

My vote goes to running too lean under boost. Unless you've been throwing some race fuel down it's throat.
Carbon build up is normal and should be expected. But, it should be relatively even across the top of the piston.

ya i followed proper break in, i drove it normal, no more than 4k rpms for about 1200miles. i dont remember what the stock bore measure was, but i know it was still the stock size bore as they come with.. it was rebuilt with 8.5:1 je forged pistons, eagle rods, bearings and rings. and the block was tooken to the maching shop for inspection and to be honed.

ya its kinda missing peices, but its just that it melted so it makes it look like peices are gone.. and the shop didnt warranty the rebuild because its all performance parts..
and i never raced on a cold engine..

Pistons are chipped/melted away and that's oil buildup, likely from blowby.

Cylinder walls are also scored.

Next time don't put in pistons unless it's bored. Our cars are too old to be using the stock bore.
ya thats what my some of my friends told me, that its oil buildup.. ever since the rebuild, ive been having lots of preasue coming out of the dipstick, but the shop told me thats normal(didnt really belive that).. and im thinking my seals on my head have something to do with the oil build up on the pistons..
