Anyone tried an external voltage regulator?

After having replaced my alternator on my TSI after it was voltage spiking (problem solved), a few months later my 98' RS started spiking. And me, having not researched enough, decided it was my alternator. Replaced it, then learned it was embedded in the ECU on 420A's. So my question is: Has anyone ever tried this: 420A Alternator Voltage Regulator - SymTech Laboratories

I ordered one, but was hoping for some reviews, because it is my daily driver... Just need to know if they work or if I should start looking for an ECU? Thank you for any help guys/gals.

So how did it work? I had the same issue but went with a different kind of regulator.
