just what the title says. Has anyone ever run 235/45/17 on stock 97gsx rims.
I ran 225/45/17 with no clearance problems. I ran 235/40/17s with no problems but it was, as i remember it, sorta tight.

OH, i have the car lowered 1.1 inches - same height lowered as the Eibach Pro Kit springs and have camber kit done.

Any takers?

I run 225/55/R17's on my ESI.. So you shouldn't have any problems LOL

Aren't 235's a little too big for the 6 1/2 inch rim. I was told by a tire installer that 225 was the max when I still had my stock wheels.

Well according to machv they will fit.

Your car came with a 215/50R17 tire, which has a rolling diameter of 25.46 inches. You can fit tires of size:

225/45R17 or 235/45R17

225/40R18 or 235/40R18

Note that although the 235 width is exactly the right fitment to match the factory tire diameter, 235 is pretty wide for factory body work, and may rub depending on tire brand and wheel offset. A 225 width will be safer in terms of fender clearance.

Wheels should be 7, 7.5, or 8 inches in width.

I run 235/40/17's on my 17X7.5's and they dont rub. Car is lowered 1.6"

no, its not too big. I when i ran the 235/40/17 tire, it looked pretty cool-the tire had a slight bulge in it. It never popped out or slide off. The handling was awesome-better then any other setup i had. Thats prabably because it was a top rated eagle gs3 tire. My drag wheels are stock 96 gst swirly wheels. They have 225s mounted on them. I belive the wheels size is 16x6. That has a pretty noticible bulge but still performs very well.

So anyone else knows for sure if 235/45/17 will fit in the wheels well?

So far i have recommendation that it is better to go smaller. its only cost me $2 per tire to go biger and with a 300hp gst.. i can really use that extra rubber :sosad:

Get a better compound tire than a wider tire.

GSX wheels are terrible wheels anyways.17x 6.5" wide. Whoever came up with those pizza cutter sizes should be shot.

Sidewall buldge is a sign that you don't have enough wheel and worsens handling.

You said better compound...which tires have the better compound? I can only afford 400 for all 4 tires. I don't care about noise or comfort--as long as at least a 45 profile for those pot holes. So far i am looking at:

Kumho ECSTA Supra 712
Dunlop SP Sport FM901
BFGoodrich g-Force Sport
Sumitomo HTR Z II

anyone of those have good compound? :D

I wouldn't (as other have mentioned). Frankly, a 7.5" wide rim is about the bare minimum for a 235- 7" is significantly narrower than the tread section, and will cause major sidewall bulge (and worsen handling).

8" wide rims would be my choice (;)) and for an upside, you can always move to a 245/40/17 later. :D

good point. I'll take your advice. Now, which tire do you guys recommend that is under $100 per tire?

Avon Tech M500. Check out the tire rack site for reviews of this tire and tests of it. Tough to beat for the price.
