Any reason not to run cheap autostore fuel filters?

Read a million thread saying the "stock" fuel filter is good for e85 and most apps under 500hp.

Well I'll be pushing around 400 with e85. And I have several choices (brands) for the "stock" filter.

Local choices are...

Fram G6553
Purolator F44662
Wix 33502
Beck/arnley 0430999

Prices from $9-17.

Or $32 for an OEM filter from the local satan.

I figure I'll go with the cheapo $9 purolator unit my first goaround and swap it out after a week or so.

Suggestions for a good "stock" filter?

Or does it really matter?

Thanks

I thought i would try to help you out since nobody really hasnt. Well i think it really doesnt matter. but i would buy wix or oem. Most people are going to say always buy the best but i really dont think it matters when it comes to fuel filter. As long as there good then get it. I would buy the wix first and see how it goes.

Only thing you really ever need to know is this.

FRAM is the worst filter ever made.

But for some information, Purolator and Wix are the top two, and blow the mobil 1 filters out of the water. Also wouldn't recommend any store brand oil filter.

Trust me, I worked at Advance Auto Parts for 4 years, and we have cut open so many filters its crazy.

FRAM is horrible. A coffee filter would filter better than a fram filter.

I put down about 350 hp and was using a puralator filter. Couldn't say that I saw any difference from stock. I got mine for cheap too.

I dont think that the filter is going to make much of any difference. It just depends on the filtering ability. Go with the name brands and the suggestions from others. You wont have a flow problem until you upgrade your lines and are moving some real fuel.

i dont know why everyone's saying fram sucks, my fuel tank was in need of a cleaning, but i didn't have a place to get it done, so i kept changing filters. i would run through at least 1 purolater ff a week before i would have to clean my injectors, then i switched to fram, 1 filter would last a month, and the stuff in my injectors was very fine... fram is good shit to me

i use a k&n oil filter for a vr4 its bigger helps cool off oile alil plus they have a one way valve in there so when you shut your car off all the oil dont drain back to the pan so when you fire it up again the oil already to the top

yeah, the inside's of a K&N also look like a FRAM and if you research hard enough, K&N filters rank with FRAM. They suck.

God damn, I couldnt agree more. I run a purolator and its fine. Fram is garbage though. Youd be better sticking a piece of cardboard in between the two lines and butting them together than using a fram.

General Motors has a Technical Bulletin about "aftermarket" filters in thier Ecotec engines causing problems. Shops are finding remanants of the filter paper material in the oil gallies after a tear down because of timing chain, and other failures. Could you guess which filter was in all the pictures in thier bulletin...um FRAM. Fram, OIL filters at least are absolute garbage, I dont have experience with thier other products because of all the negative I can see in just the quality of thier biggest product. If you drink the NAPA Koolaid I like thier filter products, partially because they have a display showing how superior thier filter is to the FRAM one =P , But also because when we cut apart a NAPA filter and an OEM one from Delco they are nearly identical in every dimension and construction. Not saying Delco is God but if its identical to OEM then its ok to me =P

i thought that this thread was about fuel filters, if i misread my bad, but reguardless becaude of this i damn sure wont be using fram ANYTHING unless its my only option... probably why my rings are going out 60,000 miles after a rebuild
