this may sound like a dumb question but are hi flow cats smog legal? and how many ponies do you lose with one rather than straight pipe???

They probably are for a visual test, but who knows if it will actually pass the emissions test. As for how much power you would lose, I don't think anybody can really answer that.

If the manufacturer/seller/item descriptions/specifications say: "For off road use only", its not street legal

I do know about California regulations though...

Catalytic Converters
A legal aftermarket catalyst is one that is listed in an ARB approved manufacturers catalogue for the year, make, model, and engine size of vehicle on which it is being installed. Manufacturers of aftermarket catalytic converters must obtain an Executive Order for their products from the Air Resources Board in order to be listed in an approved catalogue.


I seen cats with "CARB and EPA approved" in their descriptions... but usually the more expensive, name brand ones. Don't expect to find this in one of those eBay 30-50 dollar cats.

Yeah, Random Technologies is the way to go for high flow cats, I've heard many good thngs about them.
