AMS External Oil Cooler

So my car has the AMS External oil cooler installed by the previous owner. AMS DSM External Oil Cooler Kit - Amsperformance.com
Am I really getting any benefit from this and could this cause my oil pressure to be lower than normal?

I would think that cooler oil, would always be beneficial. Obviously an aftermarket would be an upgrade from stock. Whether it would cause your oil pressure to change... well think about it. pv=nrt. n and r isnt changing . v changes slightly but not significantly. so p would be directly proportional to temp. cooler temp causes lower pressure. How significant these changes are though, I cant answer that.

colder oil causes higher pressure. at least that's what my gauge tells me. 1990's came stock with an external cooler, so i wouldn't worry about it.

Ok...I was asking because my oil pressure gauge stopped working ( The Stock One ) So Im trying to find a good replacement. Im thinking it might be the sender unit because it looks in bad shape. What would be a good recommendation for a replacement?

i have one if you need one. if you ground the wire going to the sender the gauge should read full pressure. that will tell you if it's the gauge or the sender. i have both actually.

Oil pressure will vary slightly from car to car. I would leave it alone, that is not a cheap upgrade. I have one and love it.
Also oil pressure depends on where you measure it from. The OFH Oil Filter Housing will be higher than at the head.

If you ground it and the gauge does nothing, the gauge or wiring is bad. If you ground it and the gauge shoots up to full pressure then the sender was bad.

Thanks man. Im starting to get fed up with my eclipse. I havent drove it in two weeks because it needs a new cv axle, new water pump, new plugs, new manifold bolts because 4 of them broke when it bottomed out and now the oil press is not registering. Next thing knowning my luck with be something major like the turbo or something internally :-( stupid car!! grrrrr.

Damn, what did you bottom out on for all that to happen? I have a sender, not the gauge. You have a 2g so the gauge is different.

Well the story was I was racing a trans am from a stop light....We passed a cop and he hit his lights so I cut into a parking lot fast and pretty much dukes of hazzard style'd it over a hump. Good news is I beat the TA, got away from the cops and he got pulled over!! Heh

I've been offered an external oil cooler coming off of a 1990 DSM and I wanted to make sure that it would be an overall benefical part for my build. Hence the searching efforts beginning. I've read through 20 threads and really nothing pin-point about the 1991 TSi 5-speed. I'm not too knowledgeable about DSMs especially since some 1G-to-2G parts are interchangeable and vice versa. What caught my attention is the statement about '90s coming with an external oil cooler. Does this apply to my '91 since it's also a 1G?
