Sorry for the newb question here but I was wondering...with my mod list below am I ready for the full benefit of HKS 264/272 cams? If I spend 500+ bucks on these will I see/feel the typical HP gains. I have read that with these cams a 20hp gain is easy with the right turbo/boost/exhaust etc...I have the stock head, unported, 5-angle v-job, stock springs, upgraded lifters. I dont really care to be able to rev to 7500-8k rpm. I like to shift at redline. My goal is eventually 12.99's or better---consistantly. The car will only be driven once/week or less with a trip to the strip once/month....with that being said, would I be inside the range for these cams?

My Mods:

Ported EVOIII turbo w/34mm flapper, Ported EVO Manni, Ported EVO O2 Hsing, Buschur 2.5" DP, 2.5" exh piping, Denso O2, 1.75" comp outlet, Mitsu Metal multi-layer head gasket, arp studs, walbro 255 w/re-wire, SLS UICP/tb elbow, 92 tranny, mbc, open k&n, free mods, lightened stg1, Pocketlogger, SAFC, Joe P MBC, Dejon hard intake pipe, symborski shift kit, ACT 2600, Brembo rotors, AutoMeter A/F, Greddy EGT and OBX Boost gauges, car gutted (almost)-----21psi somewhat tuned, 116 race fuel---ZERO KNOCK

I am in a similar position, and I have similar mods. I did not see a FMIC in your list. I would suggest that first. That is the route I plan to take next, FMIC, cams and then I'm pretty much done. IF you want more the only thing left is to go in the engine and build it up for hard core street/strip use. That is what the 272 combo is for.

You should already be close to that 12.99. Look at my mods and they arent too far from yours. Im not sure how efficient the starion ic is but Im sure it is better than stock. A good tuning and a good launch will get you there. Go ahead and spend the money on a good clutch before yours sh)ts the bed.

Thanks for the response. I do have a Conquest FMIC but it is still sitting in the garage...I am not getting any knock whatsoever at 21psi, so until then the stock smic should okay. As for my clutch...well my last trip to the strip, the stock unit crapped the bed alright. My best run was a 13.9 at 99.86. Pretty weak...all this with 2.01 60ft. I should be 1.7-1.8 range. My car is down right now because I am in the process of installing an ACT 2600 w/ street disc. This alone should help lower et's a bit, well that and the fact that I shaved about 200 more lbs off the car since the last trip down the 1/4. So am I ready...I think I am gonna for it.

Are you still running the stock cat? your mph seems a little low with the evoIII at 21psi. That could also be the clutch slipping, Im not sure. I would install the fmic before the cams but you will need/want them eventually. I would also reccomend a set of larger injectors also. Keep in mind I have stock cams, full leather and ac with abs being the only weight Ive lost and run 12's. And with the fmic, I can run 20psi on 93 octane.

I would get a fmic and you should already be in the 12s then. I basically had that same setup last year and ran 12.8 at the track and with some more tuning gteched a 12.5 and a 12.6. I suggest a GOOD fmic ... then the cams. After the intercooler you are definitly ready for cams.

put in the FMIC. its not just for knock.

What I will try to do is get the cams...then get the Conquest fmic fabbed up and installed. Thanks

When I ran the 13.9 I was at 18.5 psi and the clutch was slipping a little...

I believe you meant to say Bar and Plate IC over the tube and Fin... I'm planning on getting a Sparco Bar and Plate IC 24x12x3 before the end of summer... I'm positive that if you put a Better FMIC on you will see a big power difference as your intake charge temps will drop a good amount over your stock (probably Heat soaked @ 20PSI) SMIC...

Damien you misunderstood me. we were talking about a specific Tube and Fin intercooler that would hold rougly 350 hp. In fact I think we were actually talking about the stock EVO VIII core. Tube and Fin cores can support more HP but Bar and plate is by far a superior setup. If you can fine a core the same dimensions as a particular tube and fin that you looking at I would try and find it in Bar and plate. However there are exceptions to every rule in this hobby.

I Run bar and plate and would never run anything else

Eric

okay so bar and plate is better than tube and fin...I have a few questions before I decide on a bar and plate...first off...does anyone know or have experience enough with the Conquest FMIC to tell if it will be heat soaked running boost levels above 22psi? I just measured it and the core came out to 17 x 8 x 3 tube and fin. How much better is this 26 x 6 x 3.5 bar and plate by PTE? I think we all agree that either is an upgrade to the stock smic. I realy dont think I will be making over 350 whp but who knows.

I really cant afford anything more expensive than this $360.00 including shipping. Once I get an intercooler I am gonna be itching for the cams.

Im just curious how your not hitting 12.9 now with that setup. With your new clutch and good driving you shouldnt have a problem with 12.9 with your boatload of mods.

Dang that sure boosted my confidence...ahahhahaha Yup GOOD DRIVING is the key...well lets see...tuning, it was my first time at the track, I only had about 4 launches prior (averaged 2.1 60ft times), wasnt going 100 percent throttle, slipping stock clutch and my latest excuse; heat soaked stock smic....I have all kinds of weak and pathetic excuses...but mostly it is the driver. The car is ready for 12's but I am not taking her there, YET. Its like right now I am dating Elizabeth Hurley (in her prime) and all she wants to do is make love; but all I am interested in is sitting on the sofa watching old episodes of the Love Boat. Not unlike satisfying Elizabeth, hitting the 12's takes practice. I have only launched above 5000 rpm one time while racing my brother's 300hp Infinity Q45. With only a few mods and 9lbs of boost I ripped that V8 a new fudge hole outta the dig. Anyway, enough excuses and sorry to get off topic

What do you guys think about this...?

First, before you do anything else, do some tuning and some driving and run your 12. It's not a good idea to try to fix problems with more mods.

Second of all, cams are worth well over 20 horsepower (30 would definateylt not be a surprise) on a WELL TUNED 16g setup. If yours isn't, don't expect much.

Good point...I was telling my brother yesterday...if my car is ready for 12's why in the hell am I getting ready to throw another grand at it. His reply was...add the intercooler, add the cams;practice the launches; then change your goal from 12.9 to 12.2 and shut up.

Sad to say I am 11 years older than him....smart ass...but it makes sense. Anyway, I think I am gonna get one of those intercoolers off of e-bay this week. Cams will be next month...
