2G Alternator reading

ok i went and got a alternator from the junk yard ( pick n pull) I have installed it and the numbers I'm getting from my meter when the car is off is 12.69v or so and with the car on it getting about 14.15v are so and with both reading they jumped around a little are these good numbers? I have seen a vid that said a good reading with the car off is 12.6v and with the car on about 14.2v so I'm not to sure about my numbers for when the car is on. I did another reading about 20 mins after my first one and now my readings are 12.65 and with the car running im getting about 13.6 to 13.7

Alternators typically produce at minimum 13.4 volts in order to re charge the battery.

Bring the alternator to your local auto parts store to have them perform a free test

i should had took it in be for i installed it didn't think about that

The output voltage varies on the current load and alternator temp. Your voltages sound normal.

It would actually be better for you to have the auto parts store test alternator on the car, This way the amount current load your car is using will be accounted for. I've had them bench test alternators, and tell me their good, only to find out their bad after a on the car test

Like steve mentioned above temperature plays a role in alternator output, There is actually a little chart in the oem service manual that gives you a estimated voltage output at various alternator temperatures, you can use as a guide.

Ya I took both in and got tested my new one was good my old one was bad. Off topic tho I have a buddie ( not the same car as us dsm) who's car won't start and he was told his cams are not turning at all what would cause this other than a broken belt? Just thought I'll ask since I'm on here at the moment.

What kind of car does your buddy have?

Most likely a broken t-belt. If the cams don't rotate by hand even, they might be siezed or some other horrific thing.

Either way, depending on the car/engine, it's not a great situation.

Oh boy well he has a 2000 ford Escort zx2 2.0 he said he was on break filled his car up parked it than it died on him and now it wont start he was told his cams don't turn but I'm not 100% sure I haven't really looked at his car yet. That's all I know at the moment he also said everything works but the cam not turning part.

Iirc the escort was timing chain driven. Prolly snapped a chain. Idk if they are interference, but he'll probably be digging into it if his cams aren't turning while cranking.

He said it's non interference ( I'm not sure what that means)

Means the valves won't hit the pistons if the valve remains open as the piston reaches top dead center

If thats the case he should be fine if he gets the belt/chain replaced
