I've heard about people with phantom knock rewiring their alternator to help fix the problem. I can't seem to really find any info on this. Can anyone explain exactically what is invloved with doing this? Pics would be great too.

look at the diagram. I have never heard of any one rewireing their alternator to get rid of phantom knock.

phantom knock is other noises like lifter tick and what not the knock sensor thinks its not. i dotn see how rewiring the alternator will take away noise that the thing is not making in the first place.

please explain its interesting.

Well I'm Not exactically sure how it works thats why im asking. Something to do with the knock sensor not getting alot of power at idle and low rpms so the knock sensor is more likely to pick up tip in knock.

I was probably one of the first people to report this problem on the PK forum. Basically, I had a very bad case of PK that I could not get rid of by traditional means. My car was great at killing alternators and my battery voltage always seemed to read a little low. On the advice of a very trused DSM mechanic, I added an additional power wire to the battery. I took some good 8ga power wire, 4 ring terminals, and made two lenghts of wire to follow the stock wire. Just hook up the new ring terminal on top of your stock wire and again at the fuse. Take your second wire and run it from the alternator fuse to where the stock wire attaches to the battery. I also made a grounding kit at the same time, running one wire off of an alternator case assembly bolt.

The morning after I did this mod my PK went away for a while and I made a post. After more time, my PK came back, but it did not seem as bad. Either way, it was very unscientific. I wound up curing my PK with a Keydiver chip (many people cautioned me on using this chip, but I was really left with no choice. After 10K miles, I am happy to report no problems--my PK must have been mechanical or electrical.

This mod did increase my voltage all around, and the battery voltage drops less when I turn on the headlights. I really can't see a bad side to the mod, and it is cheap and easy.

Now I just want to stick a 1farad cap in line with the alternator to the battery. Am I crazy?

Thanx for the info man. You should make a faq on this. So how long did it take for the PK to come back? And where are these PK forums? I've got a bad case of tip in/PK. Sometimes i'll just tap the pedal, i mean like 5% throttle and as soon as i do knock shoots up to 43. It's rediculous. Do you by chance have any pics of your rewiring? And unless your running a huge stereo i doubt your gonna need that 1 farad cap in line there.
