Well here is the deal I was driving home from a buddy's house and well boom no power and a dead car. So after I looked like a fool pushing the car about 600 feet into a parking lot I got it towed back to my house where I remove the altenator and replace it with a new one. After the install none of my electronics like my cd player, heat, lights, none of them. Half way home they suddenly kicked on. My stock boost gauge is reading battery voltage which used to be about middle, is now hardly above the negative. Dont know I am stumped. The car runs now but I dont know maybe you all have an explanation cause I dont. Help a brother out.

Does anyone that has ever changed an altenator had this problem. I just need to figure this out as it is my only car. And I dont know if this is also affected but my dsmlink wont sync with my ecu either. It takes like 10 times to get it online. Any ideas.

Well I changed the battery before the altenator died. Does dsmlink have a voltage log. I cleaned all terminals and all. The altenator was the original one so it had about 150,000 miles on it. Like I said the battery light was on for awhile before that turned off.

Well the battery is new and I just charged it before I put the new altenator on it. I dont currently have a multi meter to test with but tomorrow I will borrow one to check things out.

Just makes me think that there is something more going on here becuase on none the electronics working when I put the new one in. The car was running so there was voltage there.

Did you voltage test the battery? Did you inspect the battery terminals and wiring? It could very well have been wiring or the battery rather than the alternator.

In most cases when the alternator or battery fail, they wear out the other. In your case, your old alternator probably killed the battery. Take it to autozone or any other place and have it checked if it holds a charge. If it doesn't hold, get a new one or your bad battery will kill your new alternator.

Did you get the battery tested? Dont get the in car test at autozone or advaced pull it out. If it tests good put it back in and see what the votage is while running it should be some thing like 14.2-14.7 volts. If it tests in the 13's its low but okay if its in the 12's you have a bad alternator or wires (ie: grounds or positve to the alt).

Well the car died on me again this morning on my way to work. Is there a fuse or relay that runs or controls the altenator, or even worse could the ecu be my problem. We accidently arced the positive lead the altenator to the block, dont know if this could of caused a problem that I am overlooking. Thanks

It sounds like you popped the fuse between the battery and alt. Check the large fuses at the positive battery terminal.

Yes that short is a problem . . . You probably blew the alt. fuse (60 amp I think)in the underhood fuse box - Which may also be your charging problem. If that fuse is blown, there is no battery voltage at the alternator, therefore, the alt. is unable to charge the system . . . :talon:

Btw . . . next time you work on the electrical system - disconnect the battery !!!

yeah I had a dumbass attack. Thanks I will check that out and check back in here to see if that was possibly the problem.

Alright next question is where to get a fuse like that. It was the fuse. Will any car part store have it or will I have to special order it. Thanks..
