Hey guys, I'm seriously considering getting a GST or GSX soon, but I don't know anything about Turbos or anything of the sort(PSI, boost, etc).

So what are all the things I should know and what are some things I should look for when purchasing a new DSM?

You want a car like mine. Low miles, impeccably maintained, straight body, no accidents, has all VIN stickers, excellent paint, new motor, safe tune and adult owned by someone who actually has the money to properly maintain and invest in one of these cars without turning it into some hacked out piece of garbage.

Check for recent service records, strong oil pressure at idle and WOT, a lack of hesitation, smooth idle, no misfires, etc. Don't be afraid to get under it and look for leaks or signs of impending doom. When you drive it, make sure it boosts well, stops well and doesn't shake all over the place. You may also want to consider something that's turnkey where all of the hard work has been done and all you need to do is drive it, or add minor bolt on mods like a turbo, clutch, etc. You'll pay more for it, but you'll have less to do if the mechanicals are sound. Look for a car where all of the parts are well matched in terms of combination (i.e. no huge turbos with 550cc injectors).

Be careful and be choosy. 2G GSX's in great shape are hard to find these days, One look at ebay or Autotrader will tell you that. Overall, your budget will dictate what you can pick up and in what condition.

Good luck in your search,

Andy

Yeah, I know all to well how rare GSX's are, especially ones that have been well taken care of.

I know what you mean, if hard to find a guy selling a 98 tsi awd with lots of mods, and well taken care of, espicially if its in near perfect shape inside and out, espicially a guy in west virginia, and the hardest part of finding a guy selling one at this email address...... [email protected] ;)

Now that was funny!

Ha ha, yeah, be very careful on this. I suggest getting a VIN check on carfax.com, check out the mods if any, and be sure they are still installed on the car when you pick it up. I had a buddy of mine buy a GST, all modded out supposedly, and come to find out the guy sold the cams and valvetrain he had along with some other mods on his car before he came back to get it. He paid the price for the "mods" and didnt get anything but a crappy exhaust and a body kit, whoo hoo. You can never be to sure with people now a days. And yeah, to find one in good or great condition, yeah, very unlikely bro. I had gotten extremely lucky with my talon, check out my pics, nothing wrong, not a scratch on it or in it. All the maintenance was kept up religiously, and yeah, only a minor setback on mine though. The guy I bought it from had the 6 bolt conversion done to it. Then, when I bought it, he put the newly rebuilt 7 bolt back on and sold it to me therafter. I didnt mind the fact that it was rebuilt and bored over and balanced and honed and everything, but that fact that he did the switcharoo, yeah, that pissed me off. But hey, I have a ton more mods than he had on it, and have been taking better care of it than he ever dreamed of. Just dont take anyones word for it, check it out, do your homework. Talon TSi AWD are alot more rare compared to GSX's, 2,900 in production for Talon's in the year 98 and 10,000 compared to Eclipses in year 98, so you take your pick on what is rare. Talon's have a better body style I think, but Eclipse's have all the body kits, and you cant do it to your Talon unless you do a conversion. But oh well, hope this helps...

Which is why I'll ###### just settle on a GST for my first turbo DSM until I move up in pay. I'd rather have an Eclipse because I just like the name better and more parts are made for them(body kits, headlights, etc). But I agree, the 97-98 Talons have the better stock look than any other DSM.

So where can I go to learn about PSI, boost, and other need-to-know stuff about the turbo line of DSMs?

Read through www.vfaq.com and the forums here. Go to http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/tech_center/turbo_tech101.html and read the 101, 102, and 103 turbo tutorials to find out about overall turbocharger stuff. Buy Corky Bell's book, "Maximum Boost".

If you can read the forums daily, learn enough that you can actually start helping others, and get 50 legit reputation points, you'll be on your way. It takes time, but you don't have a car yet ;) so you've got time.

I was just giving my opinion bro, don't get all offended and start to curse. :nono: Yeah I do give the Eclipses that, Body kit wise, head and tail lights are always found, but the parts are exactly the same, to the D and the S and the M, that is why they both are called the Chryco/Mitsu TWINS! Exactly the same, the parst are interchangeable. Like I said, compared to Eagle Talons in 2,900 to Mitsu Eclipses over 10,000 in 98, yeah, what is more rare..... :thumb:

I also agree that the 97-98 Talons have the best styling. I would recommend that you hold out until you get the exact car that you want ( hopefully 98 AWD w/low miles, in mint condition). You can find it you just have to wait and be patient. I worked for three years and saved every penny I made to buy my car. When I turned 19 I spent all of my hard earned cash on my Talon. I got basically all that I wanted aside from the AWD. Fully loaded, Tsi, perfect condition for the price I was looking for. If I could go back though I would have waited out for an AWD. I have had the car for 6 years now and I still want an AWD. my advice is just that.
