My car came with a aldl cable. The cable has aldl to serial than serial adapter to Palm hot sync. What do I have to do to turn this into a usb pc cable? Just get a key span or am I going to have to do some wiring also?

It's more than just hardware. I assume you want to connect your PC directly to the ALDL port. Although serial and USB are related in some regard (both are serial communications), the protocols are quite different. If you had access at the driver level, you may be able to lock USB into a blind serial mode with no handshake or anything.. it's much, much more than just wiring.

You'd have more luck with ALDL to Serial, Serial to USB, and USB to PC. However, you'd need a Serial to USB adapter that supports the funky baud rate that the ECU runs with its ALDL interface as it's nonstandard.

AND then you'd need compatible software running on a PC/laptop. Is there even any out there?

I have to order the keyspan or a ftdi chip anyway. Ill just include the null in my order.

Only place I found a cable in town was a computer store. The cable's a prolific 2303. The guy said he hasn't met a baud rate it can't handle yet. He also said I could bring the cable back if it did not work. Do you think this cable would work? I was having doubts about it.

Slightly off topic, but there are a few recent products that have really streamlined the logging cables actually.

This link works great and is cheaper then the old way surprisingly.

I was able to get the usb-rs232 for about $7 on ebay. The rest cost almost nothing.

I went this route after seeing how much the keyspans have increased in price since the last time i made a cable. Now $30 or so.
