Air conditioning continuous blowing

I have done my research and have not been able to find any answeres to my problem. I have a 97 talon n/t and the original engine was swapped due to high mileage before I bought the car from a private seller.It needs a major tune up which i am getting soon.the problem that I have is with the air conditioning.When i have it switched off it continues to blow air at a low level,if I have the temp setting on high heat and its switched off i can put my hand up to the vent and still feel heat blowing and the same with if i have it on cold air.It blows continuously whenever the car is switched on,how should i fix this?

Is the A/C compressor actually engaged? Is the A/C light on? The problem is most likely a faulty blower switch.

Are you set to "defrost"?

I check and double check it while im driving and the defrost is off. What kind of A/C light, I have not noticed any light besides the panel backlight.

The A/C light is in the A/C button itself. People are asking about defrost because when in that position the A/C is forced on (regardless of the temp setting). If your blower does not shut off suspect the blower switch (unplug it and see if it goes off).

Second candidate would be a short in the fan speed resistor. Do you have fan speed control?

How do i disconnect the blower switch to see if it goes out? Yes, I do have a fan speed control.

switch the air from outside to inside or whatever that knob is?

It won't have anything to do with the inside/outside selector.

What I meant was, do you have control over your fan speeds? When you twist the selector, do the speeds change?

When I purchased my 99 GS off the lot (almost a decade ago), I turned in into the dealership a month later for the exact same complaint...my problem was the window would be fogged up after turning it off even though I had not been running the A/C. They showed me the same thing: selector switch turned to defrost will always run the a/c on low. They also concured that even though I have the fan switch to off (on any vent setting), there will always be a small amount of ventlation blowing through due to the design...

yes, my fan speed does work, it goes from lowest to highest and blows when on the appropriate setting, thanks again kergilman that was helpful
