A guy I know is selling a 94 talon tsi. It's not running right now because he said he blew his ecu. He told me he let his son install a radio an it blew after that. I'm wondering if it might just be the mpi fuse or maybe a ecu itself. I talked him down to 600 for the whole car. Any advice is needed. He said the motor ran strong an no oil leaks. I'm looking for a dd while I rebuild my awd one.

My exp. with a ECU is that it would crank and would be hard to start... If it cranks do a compression test on all cyl's and see what comes up and post it on here... You will know if the motor is probaly OK then.

No, IF the ecm is bad then I won't turn over at all. I would be careful. I've never heard of a radio install blow an ecm. This guy's either misinformed or he's hiding a bigger problem. I would check all the fuses and go from there.

Electrical can be iffy I had a 91 ecu that I stuck in to see if it would change the way my car ran and it made it run like crap compared to the original, but the car still started. If you have the chance I would take the ecu out and check for blown capacitors. Other wise like stated check for compression or other problems.

I'll be going down saterday hopefully to go see it. I'm gonna take my spare mpi fuse, ecu an my comprssion tester. What numbers should I look for on the test? wish me luck I might end up buying my 5th 1g an second i'd own right now.

That's what I was thinking. But I already have one dsm that isn't running I might buy it to buy it an have 2 non running dsms LOL

I would reccomend taking a battery and an extra ecu with you. Try starting it with the new ecu, and if it doesnt start, offer him 500. You cant go wrong buying that car that cheap. Especially if the motor has plenty of compression.

I would say walk away or bring an ecu and try to get it to start. No way you can check for leaks or issues without it running

You can crank an engine with a blown ecu, just wont get any spark. But really no point to crank it for a compression test. Compression tests are best done with a engine at operating temp ad will never get to operating temp with no spark.
