I am tuning with 680's and SAFC, big 16g
6 bolt block, 2g head with 1g CAS, so I can adjust timing.

Is there any trick to adjusting timing? Can you simply just losen the bolts and adjust the CAS or is there anything special you need to do?

My problem:
I have my highs dialed in perfect, could do pulls at 11psi with no timing retard in 2nd and 3rd, so I turned up the boost a little. First gear and second gear pull amazing. 3rd gear doesnt, so I did a log and I am getting a LOT of timing pulled in 3rd gear, but none in second. Has anyone had this problem?
I am thinking maybe I need to retard timing since i get 27 degrees by redline.

help? thanks.

ummm you are missing something very important...

a TIMING LIGHT!

ok, im not that dumb heh. I know how to use a timing light, and i know that you need to compare timing with the gun to timing with a logger to calc base timing. But I have read something about needing to ground the ecu while you do this, otherwise as soon as you drive the ecu will recompensate as if you havnt made any adjustments at all. So I am wondering is anyone has done this before and a step by step of how exactly i need to go about it. thanks.

you dont use the logger to set base timing. The logger has no idea what the base timing really is. You can experiment by watching the logger and changing the base timing.. I guarentee it will stay at whatever it is. It tells you what the timing should be based on airflow/rpms, etc. These cars do not know what the real timing is. The only way is by a timing light. Ground the Idle Motor so that it idles at ~750 RPM. Make sure all acc. are off connect the timing light and see what the timing is. Then you loosen the CAS and turn it to advance or retard timing until its where you want it.. (i suggest 5 BTDC) Then tigten the CAS back up. Unground the ISC and go drive.

I don't think the 2G's have a plug under the hood to ground to adjust timing like the 1G's do since you can't adjust timing on a 2G with the stock CAS. I would also like to know how you properly set your 2G up to adjust timing, i.e. what needs to be grounded before you hook up your light and hit the pulley with a beam. I'm on a weird boat because I used my 2G cover on my 1G motor and am not sure if the 2G cover and 1G cover are the same. My point is I don't know if when I'm adjusting my timing per the light if the reference is right to begin with.

Can anyone confirm if a 1G timing cover, lower end with numbers, and 2G cover are the same, I know it went on fine, but it never crossed my mind that the timing numbers might be different until I had the motor in the car.

Yea i also have a 1g motor with 2g head. I am going to head up to roadrace when I get a chance, Rob told me he'd take care of it for me. Ill watch how they do it an report back.

Im almost certian that you have the ecu plug to ground out. It's the same one you would ground to adjust your idle with the BISS. Now heres a thought for ya. Unless your profile isnt up to date you dont have a frontmount do you? First and secodn pull then your tiny little sidemount gets heat soaked and you get timing pulled because of it. Im not saying this is what is happening, just giving you something to think about. Heres a link about setting the idle on a 2g. It should tell you what plug to ground out.
