Ok, hopefully this is in the right place and my question isn't too simple or something. I've read around but I don't see anything exactly like my problem, my apologies if I missed it. I thought I'd try this forum first as it seems by far the most active of the ones I saw.

So, I have a '99 Eclipse GSX, about 140K on the odometer, I'm the original owner and it has no mods whatsoever. A while ago I started having this problem where if I put my foot down hard(ish) the car starts juddering like crazy and my coffee goes everywhere. If I accelerate slowly and gradually then it's fine.

I took it to a local shop that has a good reputation and they replaced the ignition coils and wires, but when I picked it up it was worse than before. I took it back again and they said the part they put in was defective so they replaced it, but it made no difference. I didn't bother going back because I figured they didn't know what they were doing if they thought it was fixed when the car was running like crap. Maybe they're good at fixing Buicks or something, but I don't think they know much about this car.

The problem is worst when the engine isn't fully warmed up yet, but it never goes away completely. If anyone has any suggestions as to what the problem might be I'd appreciate it.

Boost leak test it. Make sure your plugs are gaped .26-.28 make sure you use NGK's. Are you throwing any CEL's

Welcome to our humble abode...:thumb:

i had the same problem with my tsi it turned out to be the combo of gumed up fuel injectors and my fuel pump gave out shortly after. the jerkking was happening ### the ecu was reading to much air from my turbo and cuting it of and then with in a sec leting it spool agian ect.

I agree with the boost leak proposition.

My '90 TSI is doing the same thing, though I think it is the MAF sensor or possibly a small exhaust leak.

Let us know if you fix it, and what it was.

GL!

Thanks for the quick replies. Yes it has thrown a few CELs, the most recent was something about a random misfire, but I lost the paper that had the code on it. I haven't had any more since that one was cleared though. I'll see if can get a boost leak test done, but I have to find a decent shop somewhere. Everywhere I go seems to be full of bozos. Thanks again for the help.

You can do the boost leak test yourself. Forget the bozos. Search is your friend. You can do a Boost Leak Test, Compression Test, Checking your turbo for shaft play, along with getting your injectors flow tested. Buy a datalogger. Owning a DSM will make a mechanic soon enough. Trust me, I NEVER thought I would be working on a car this much... I shoulda went into automotive :ohdamn:

When you own a dsm it comes down to the point where you are your own mechanic, this is because most shops wont know what their doing and will just guess.

If not maybe a new coil pack.

Did you even read his first post? They replaced the coils twice. :ohdamn:

OP - Pick you up a Chilton or Haynes manual, or even better search around for the factory manual. You can get it and lots of other useful stuff on a CD for about $40.

These cars aren't hard to work on...you just gotta do a lot of reading around here and dig in. You'll save a lot of money in the long run, and end up with a good understanding of your car as well. ;)

im having a similar problem, did a blt and found my BISS leaking and my injector o rings severly leaking, parts are a week away so wont know till then

And check the knock sensor as well.

If it's gone bad, or loose, it will rattle around and make your computer think it has knock and pull the timing. My car did the same thing. Knock sensor was out. literally, hanging on by it's wires.

Hey thanks a lot everyone for your suggestions, I really appreciate it. It sounds like I'll need to get this done myself, unless I decide to get my car to limp out to see 95fwdtsi18psi in Kentucky :)

I do have a good friend who is a whiz with cars in general, not DSMs particularly, but he could help, he rebuilt his MG from the ground up and stuffed a huge Chevy engine in it. Just have to schlep out to Silver Spring MD and bring him a few beers. I'll print out some of this and the boost leak test link and take it with me. Unfortunately I live in an apartment and they frown on people working on their cars in the parking lot, so I can't do it here.

Thanks again, when I get it figured out I'll let you know what happened.
