A/T Slipping or something else?

When I'm driving in overdrive going up hill and trying to hold my speed steady, the car jerks like it's on a very bumpy road. Also, I feel like when I'm pressing the gas, more power is being generated, but it's not being put to the ground.

This scares me, what do you guys think this is? Is that the feeling of a transmission slipping? Any common problems? I changed the transmission fluid with DiamondStar (stock fluid) and it seems to feel slightly better, but still does it.

Please help! Anyone!

When you add gas peddle does the RPM's flare up or does the car tend to accellerate with the RPM staying where it is pretty well? If the latter your TQ is in lockup and if you are accellerating with the TQ locked and let off sometimes you get a surge.

When i add gas to accelerate and the RPMS are above 3,000rpm in 3rd or 4th gear, sometimes the car will jerk violently. This really scares me and makes me wonder what it could possibly be. What do you think?

Anyone have any further thoughts and what parts to replace/rebuild?

Watch the RPM and see if it flares or not if it flares up meaning the RPM jumps but the car does not accellerate then you are unlocked and slipping if you roll into it and the car accellerates and the RPM stay within 500 then you are locked up.

Check your spark plug wires. The car will jerk if they are loose.

check to make sure that your fluid is full in the trans. If you changed the fluid you might have missed checking after you ran it....and check it while its running....

Just an idea. I was having major issues, the jerk and slip thing like you where asking about with my trans and thought it was all kinds of things, but it ended up it was low(way low) on fluid.

Thanks for the reply! You've given me hope again. I noticed that after placing more fluid into the transmission, it got a little bit better, but it's still bad.

How do I check it when running? Do I simply drive around, then place it in neutral and check hte level?

Ive always shifted through all of the gears, keeping it in gear for a few seconds, then put it back in neutral, shut the car off, and then check it.

You need to the keep the car running while checking in neutral. Also like JohnnyC said, shift thru all the gears and stay in each gear for a few seconds.

Now it has gotten really bad. When I"m on the freeway, it jerks pretty hard. When I get off the freeway and going from 1st -> 2nd -> 3rd, it's very very jerky and it seems like I need to give more gas to get it to go.

I checked the spark plugs and they look fine. I'm almost out of clues, can anyone suggest anything?

THanks! ALSO, how much should it cost to get a rebuilt transmission?

PS: I notice the jerking starts after ~15min of running the car, so could it be that my transmission is overheating when I'm driving that's causing it to jerk?

Looks like it is time to give IPT a call. And definitely stop driving it until you figure the problem out. Of course you know this already I am sure.

Some thing similar was happening to me last week, turns out the guy who installed my spark plugs had the gaps way off, under a load the ecu was pulling timing and that was making the car ride jerky as you described it. Works like a charm after regapping the plugs, further more what octane are you using? If youve used any thing under 91 in the last few weeks try disconecting your battery for a few minutes to reset your computer, I did this at the same time I regapped the plugs. Good luck, hope it's not your trans ( or hope it is so that you have an excuse to call jon =))

i think i am having the same problem as stockmkt8r.... when I am driving and at around 2 grand i hit the gas lightly the car like jerks, like the rpm shutters, like it is trying to find its gear, usally only happens when its cold out?? i've been asking this question for months still no answer please help

I think I have found the culprit! I replaced my spark plugs today with NGK BPR6ES and used my old set of spark plug wires and all of a sudden the car drives a whole lot better! I also reset the ecu per your recommendation. So, tomorrow I'm going to buy a new set of plug wires and hopefully all symptoms will disappear. I gapped the NGK's to .032

Thanks for the responses everyone... Also, to the person who has the same problem as me, try replacing spark plugs and wires, it may be the reason why your car is all jerky. If you notice that it's messing up inbetween gears, then it may be your tranny.

i just bought the same spark plugs the stock NGK, do I have to gap them,and how do i do it??

Normally you don't have to gap the plugs, but its always good to at least check them. Walmart, Shucks, Napa, Auto Zone, or any place that carries car parts should have a "spark plug gap tool" Costs less than a dollar. Doesn't need to be fancy.

Also when you guys are saying shutter, like RPM spike? The rpms spike higher and its not going anywhere? Or the car shutters, can you feel the shutter in the shifter, does it feel like something is slipping? A shutter can be caused by many many things....

Tell more about the shutter, what you have looked at and it might help in further ideas...

hey the problem is fixed ..... it doesnt hestaite anymore it was the spark plugs ans wires i guess they were orginal and 75k was too much, but here's the crazy part, i took it to my mechanic, casue i needed to rechage my a/c.. i got the bill back and he chhaged $80 to install the wires and plugs, i thought that was ridious,anybody agree and i suppied and wires and plugs, i bought accel's 8mm and stock NGK, i was shocked :thumbdown

Yes, $80 is way too much to install plugs and wires. It'd be a okay deal if it were plugs, wires, and installation though. It takes me ~30minutes to do the whole job myself. Wires are ~$40 and plugs are $1.99 each.

THe stuttering occured when I would hit the gas, kind of like it would hesitate, jerk, and then go. When I would hold steady speeds, the car would slightly jerk and when under load (going up hill), it would violently jerk and do a "thud thud thud thud thud." It sounded really bad, but after new wires and plugs, the car's running great! No tranny problems after all.
