A/T problem or something else?

I recently bought a 98 Talon Tsi AWD, and when starting from a stop the car is very sluggish. It almost feels like it's starting off in a higher gear, because it shifts and then I have power. I've even noticed that at a stop if I let off the brakes the car dosen't nudge forward. This doesn't happen all the time ,but I would say about 65% of the time.
I've never owned anything that was an automatic before and I really don't know where to start. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
