I haven't specifically found what i'm looking for on here and I don't have the car in front of me to measure anything. My car is 170 miles away to be more precise. We mounted my downfiring 20g and with the internal wastegate I cannot mount the stock fans. While the drive home is 95% highway, I really don't feel comfortable driving without any fans. I'm looking on fleabay for a quick fix at the moment and I've decided that I would like a single fan solution for now. The problem is I don't know what size fan I should be looking for. Is a 16 inch fan too big to put right in the middle of the radiator? I found one that's claiming 2700CFM for about $50.00, but I'm not sure if it's physically too large for my radiator. What is the largest 'slim' fan I can run right in the middle of the radiator?

Have you looked in to trimming the stock radiator fan shroud? I was able to use my stock radiator fan by simply trimming down the plastic until it fit. For the AC fan, the (external) wastegate and dump tube didn't provide enough clearance, so I went with a 12x2" SPAL fan. An hx40 is a bit larger than a 20g and is also down-firing, so I don't see why it wouldn't work...unless the internal wastegate actuator is the issue.

But to answer your question, 12" will be the most common response, but I think you could get away with a 14" (I remember someone was barely able to mount 14" fans).

My 12" SPAL JUST fit on my Mitsumoto radiator, no extra clearance but perfect fit. I am pushing but it would fit inside the same way and is very slim. It is a 10 blade I believe, not the 5 balde thicker model.

if you no longer have your AC condenser. Get some slim twelves off ebay for 50-60 dollars and reverse the polarity and put them on the other side of the radiator so there pushers and clean up the engine bay

I think mine are 12"s and I have two of them pushing, zero overheating issues. Works good and looks even better. I believe I got them from Frozenboost.

My ebay fans didn't move enough air, not what they claimed anyway, so I bought a SPAL to supplement. Put the SPAL on the Passenger side and the ebay 12" on the Drivers side. The ebay 12" is smaller and fit better with my oil cooler and PS cooler, just fyi. ALSO, I played with mine before I installed them to see how good they moved air in PUSH mode. I found out that besides reversing the polarity, that they would (the ebay models) push more if I also turned the fan blade over. I suggest trying it yourself to see what you think but my ebay fans liked it, the SPAL however, did not need the blade reversed and it pushes sooo much more air. Just so everyone knows. Pushers definately clean up the engine bay and make alot more room to work. :thumb:

Not sure what you mean by in front of the cooler. If I put mine in front of my oil or ps cooler, then they won't push enough through the radiator...just clairifying.

I am sure you are right, I forgot to see where he was from and in Europe, it would be a "cooler" for our "automobiles". I prefer mine in front of the radiator (cooler) for clearance purposes in the engine bay, however I feel they perform better as a puller if room is available. I in fact am using 2 pushers and a factory passenger side puller fan. The 2 pushers come on automatically or with me turning on my A/C switch, but the factory fan is wired to its own switch to be used whenever i think the temps are just too high and they come right down. High temps in my car are mostly due to me having my FMIC and FOG LIGHTS so there isn't alot of room for air to get to the radiator. I am working on an air dam to mount right under the "cooler" to direct more airflow up to it for assistance in staying on the cool side.

OP: I have a 5558,which i believe is a bit larger than a 20g. It is internally gated. The actuator is the pain in the ass. Trim the passenger fan and if you have an aftermarket radiator use washers to sit the ac fan flush against the radiator. You will need to trim the shroud on the pass. side fan. I even had to trim the blades! Still kept my temps ~210 idling on a 105* day. Cruising was just under 200 to 203* on the hottest days. What i would do if i were you is get an extra ac fan and mount it on the passenger side. I think the connectors are the same and you should get enough flow, and certainly have the clearance, to keep temps down.
Stock fans flow a LOT, remember that.

I have a couple 12" ebay fans that came with my CXracing radiator. The radiator is awesome. The fans? Who knows, but probably worth jack shit from the looks of them. If you must go aftermarket then go FAL or SPAL. These are 2 names that ive read nothing but great things of. Price is higher but its worth it.

I did, they work very well, the fans+shroud. Very stong fans, high cfm rating. I unfortunately use only one fan as the other is occupied by a turbo and exhaust many, its covered up (the hole left by empty fan ). And I maintain 193_200 idle temp. And cruise is 205_215. This is a/c off, since I cannot fit an a/c fan, these are temps w/out a/c

I am thinking about trying to use a GM fan from a Pontiac Grand AM. I went out to the garage and popped the hood on mine and took a couple pictures, the fan is pretty slim for being an OE fan.

It is my understanding that you can reverse polarity and run it as a pusher but the thing is, if the blades are 'directional' then it will make the fan almost completely useless.

Just a suggestion but flip the blade over and TEST to see if they push more when using a "universal" type fan or a puller being used as a pusher. I have a test bench with a 20 amp power supply but I suppose a battery charger would work since not many people would have a big power supply like I do (actually have 2 and strap them together to power up high amp draw items like linear amps etc).

Interesting, true, if the fan moves more when modified (might not be noticeable even if) probably means it's a cheap fan since all they do is flip blade and polarity to get puller/pusher...

Absolutely correct. My SPAL needed nothing, but it was a PUSHER to start with. The Flebay fan was the one that needed flipped and reverse polarity wired. The SPAL out pushes the Flebay by 2 fold, hands down, so I use it on the passenger side, and the cheapy on the drivers side. :talon:

Heres my situation. I have the HX35 with the punishment racing 02 housing and tial 38 combo. I would prefer to use the mishimoto fan shroud / fan combo as pullers, as my primary choice. But I dont know if the driverside fan will clear the Tial wastegate. (so thats my first question anyone know if it will fit)

2nd - question is if my primary choice wont work, is there a Shroud that is made for only 1 fan (passengerside)? am i correct in what I read about still better to have a shroud that only has 1 hole cut out, and then I'd just put a pusher fan on the driverside.
