i have a 98 gst, my mods are a greddy 3" cat back, greddy upper and lower ICP, greddy type s BOV apexi 3" downpipe, assortment of autometer carbon gauges, and a datalogger.
Everything else is stock. When i go WOT grey smoke pours out, does this mean im running rich? The area around my exhaust is black and it just dosent seem to be as fast as it should. Any help is appreciated

Black would be rich and white is generally oil. You may be getting a little of both but the black on your rear bumper is probably from it being to rich

would a safc or safcII help this rich situation?

If it's rich yes an AFC will allow you to lean it out. You would also need a wideband 02 so you can actually tell how rich or lean your car is. You could do this by dynoing your car and using their wideband or purchase your own. You can buy a PLX M-300 for under $300:thumb:

To be safe, you should check your turbo for shaft play. Pull off the intake pipe and try to wiggle the compressor wheel up and down, in and out, side to side. A very small amount of movement is acceptable, but more than a little may be a sign of upcoming turbo failure. The gray smoke could be a little oil making its way past the seals and burning in the engine. Taking off the lower intercooler pipe would tell you if any oil is leaking.

Are you recirculating your BOV, by the way?

I'm geussing since you have zero done to the fuel system that you are loosing oil in the turbo at boost. Check for shaft play and check for oil inside the turbo. How much is "pouring out"? A puff at up-shift or constant cloud?

Wrong.

Black = Rich
Blue = Oil
White = Water/Coolant

When I was in bad need of a valve job at 160K, my Mobil 1 10W-30 burned white/grey whenever I left from a light or started it up in the morning. With this happening at WOT I would be more inclined to think it was turbo or headgasket. I would check the shaft play on the turbo, and then check your coolant levels. You can look for oil in your coolant which could indicate a bad head gasket or a bad turbo, but not definitely rule either out. Checking fluid levels, shaft play, and doing a compression check should help you along in that diagnosis. My 2 bucks is on the turbo being the culprit. That would suck, but it's definitely an excuse to upgrade.

thanks for the help guys and yes BOV is recirculated.

i just rebuilt the bottom end of the motor, new crank, pistons and 1 rod, all new gaskets 3000 miles ago. the stock t25 turbo was rebuilt 2000 miles ago, just checked shaft play and no up and down shaft play and mabye 1/16 inch play in and out. also when the car is at an idle, it smokes a little and im thinking valve seals might need replaced since rings are new and it hasnt been run over 14 psi.

at WOT, theres constant (grey) smoke coming out of the exhaust, and at an idle its blue.

so i should run a compression check to make sure rings are sealing properly?

do you think it has anything to do with incorrect timing?

anything else you might need to know that im leaving out?

again, thanks for the help:thumb:
