My 1g has had the head rebuilt in march. For the past month, I have seen puffs of bluish/white smoke coming from my exhaust. When it first started, it happened from a decel; i was in 3rd decelerating and then i punched it, and i saw a puff of smoke. Since then, it has gotten worse. It started smoking when I started the car, then it would go away, then it would smoke while it was idling warming up. When I stopped at stop signs/redlights, it would smoke pretty bad, but not while driving at a rpm higher than idle.

Now it seems like its smoking all the time, and even worse than before. I did a compression test, and 2 cylinders were 155 2 with 165+. I did the wet test with no positive results. (1-2 psi increase across all four).

Ive read numerous posts about smokey idle = bad valve seals, but after 1200 miles?

I know I need a leakdown test, but what do you guys think is up with the smoke?

Could be valve stem seals, or could be an issue with your turbo. Have you checked your intercooler piping for oil?

yes, i have checked the intercooler piping, the only place Ive noticed a little bit of oil was on the intake pipe itself. I have an aftermarket intake pipe w/ a catchcan attached to the breather; i have no breather lines running to the intake.

this may sound stupid, but if my exhaust valve seals were bad, wouldnt that let oil go into the turbo anyway? so oil on the exhaust side of the turbo doesnt necesarily mean bad turbo?

I ran my finger on the inside of my tailpipe today, oil all over it. Does this mean anything?

If the valve seals were bad then the oil would be burnt in the combustion chamber and it would not leave a residue in the turbine/o2 housing. Maybe the manifold but nothing else. It really sounds like a blown turbo. My exhaust was covered in oil too when it was bad, and I had syptoms just liek your smoke on deceleration, and under boost. sometimes at idle.
