Hello, My name is Brandon. I am the proud new owner of a 92 eagle talon with 160,000 miles. It has a 6 bolt 4g63 engine and 5 speed transmission. Upon purchasing this talon The guy that I bought it from told me it had an overheating problem. He stated that he had replaced the head gasket and timing belt. He told me he thought the thermostat was sticking, So I removed the 160 degree thermostat and on th way home the car did not get hot, The temp guage stayed right on the middle. After a while the car started dieing whenever I would stop. However If I kept my foot on the gas, or did not come to a complete stop the car would stay running. It also tries to die when downshifting and
all the idiot lights come on for a second, but then it recovers. I found a receipt in the glove box from pepboys that says customer advises it sounds like a pulley is loose, vehicle idling high and raddle sound when accelerating. customer advises he replaced timing belt prior to diag. on vehicle. note to customer: rcm:$791.72 X 1 2521 replace head/head gasket pkg preice for replace head/head gasket pkg does not include machine shop charges for replacing valves or machine work on head. customer is aware vehicle came in with bent valves. The guy told me he had the head rebuilt and put a new head gasket and timing belt on. The gasket and timing belt look to be brand new. He told me the timing may be of a tooth and 1 or more exhaust valve may need to be adjusted.
The oil is slightly grey, But there is no smoke or water from the exhaust. The car will start and run. There is a slight ticking noise. When the car died on the way home the oil pressure got low and the oil light came on, So i towed it the rest of the way. I put a quart of oil in and it still starts and runs, but has a ticking noise. I am scared to try to drive it again. It is low on coolant. What could be the deal here? Does the head need to be re-torqued ? Does it need a new water pump ? There is also a squeling noise upon first starting it and the serpentine belt seems a little loose. Please help guys. I am new to dsm, I use to be a honda guy. Your help and suggestions are appreciated vey much.

When you rule out radiator, low coolant, and thermostat and the engine is still overheating it is usually a warped head/block which would be supported by the receipt. Some of your other problems could come from a boost leak, do a search for "boost leak test" to learn how to make a boost leak tester and how to use it (costs less than $5) vacuum leaks are common problems to all cars too. Long and the short is 1. Get the car timed 2. Run a boost leak test 3. Check for vacuum leaks 4. Replace the thermostat 5. Change the oil and do a tune up which is something you should always do anyways when you buy a car, see how many problems these steps resolve and post back, if none of the problems are fixed by the time you do the oil change and tune up don't yet because thats the only step that costs more than the spare change you've got on your dresser (assuming you have a timing light already). All of the problems you mention are pretty universal in all cars so if you don't have the expertise to do any of this any backyard mechanic should be able to do it for you.

The guy I bought it from said he had the head rebuilt to stock specs using all new parts ,and he put the head on with a new head gasket last may. This was after the
diagnostics at pepboys. So, what could the deal be ? The car starts and runs fine right now.
There is a little ticking going on and the oil pressure is low, the guage show about 1/4 pressure. When I check the oil the dipstick reads full, But the oil is slightly grey. It smells like oil though. Could the head just need to be re-torqued ? The guy that I bought it from said the timing may be of 1 tooth and at least 1 of the exhuast valves may need adjusting or replacement. There is also shrieking going on when starting the car. The serpentine appears to be a little loose, could it be slipping ? Please help !!!

I'm thinking the oil is grey because there's gas getting in it somehow. The oil is a little thinned out and it smells a little like gas. I'm going to do a compression test, replace the water pump, check and adjust the timng, flush the cooling system, replace the thermostat,
change the oil and replace the injector seals. I'm almost certain the headgasket is not the problem (I hope)

I resolved the dying issue by adjusting the idle with the idle adjusting screw on the throttle body. It still dies if I have the A/C on. With the A/C off it's fine. I also changed the oil using 60% Lucas oil stabilizer and 40% castrol gtx 10w-30. It runs nice and smooth now and the ticking has gone away. (It was due for an oil change anyway. I removed the thermostat and refilled the cooling system with 50/50 blend antifreeze and that resloved the overheating issue. The car runs and drives good now. thanks for all your help and suggestions. Oh yeah, I guess the oil smell was just that the oil was old, I've driven a good 200 or 300 miles since the oil change and there's no gas smell.
