98 TSi AWD re-light an old flame

Well guys Im back! Its been at least a 10 year hiatus, and a lot has changed. I moved states, got married, and had a kid. I have owned the talon in my avatar the entire time, and it hurts to say but it hasnt ran in at least 10 years as well. Maybe the DSM bug has bit me hard enough to get that one going too...

My old 97 TSi's build thread that hopefully will be updated again real soon: https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/tjctalons-2gb-talon-build.430326/page-2#post-153243298

Anyways long story short, I found this car on facebook about 3 weeks ago in Iowa. I bought it sight unseen (insane, I know) and I had a cousin drive it back to Omaha. After only seeing pictures, and going off of a family member who knows nothing about these cars, I was eager to go and get it. So this weekend we drove out there, and I drove her home 4 hours to SW Nebraska. After looking at the title I found out it was a 98, not a 97 like I thought it was. Even better! This build is in real time, so depending on life it might take some time. Not even sure what direction im going with it yet either, I had an idea, but after looking at the car my mind has changed.

I finally got to get a get look at it today. Here are some pictures from today:

After getting my hands on her and doing some maintenance, I was more and more pleased with my purchase. This car needs a handfull of little things, but it is the cleanest dsm I have personally ever seen. It appears to be taken care of very well.

For now, Im going to be doing all the pre- horsepower necessities and fixing all the little things that need to be addressed. So today I did an oil change, gapped in some fresh NGK's and did some new wires. I also installed a new drivers side door handle (forgot how fun of a job that was).

So here is currently the things I'm going to address first.

Oil in trans/tcase/rear diff
replace battery with the correct size
Change out damaged tail lights
Replace the drip moldings
Change the rims
Replace passenger door handle
Find replacement interior parts that are missing/broken
Figure out how to fix the sunroof cover

And I'd really like to get the paint/body in 100% condition. I'm planning on talking to a body shop and having the faded plastic parts, door handles and wing repainted. I also have a set of 2ga twistys from my very first talon that I want painted and installed as well.

And I may have already started buying some goodies too... Short route FMIC and I have a full 3 inch exhaust. PR dp and a bnib Thermal r&d cat back. ECMlink will be one of the next major purchases too, after my past experience I found it should be one of the first things you should start with.

Welcome back, man!!!

Congrats on the new find. Keep that bad boy stock and dial all the maintenance in and just enjoy it while you finish the beast you started in 2012/13! 🤘🤘🤘

i just did mine, I'll try post some pics. basically scrape off all the old glue and fabric and re-glue a new piece. Did your headliner come tan? Was the interior originally tan? Nice find!

Is there 2 pieces to it? I can only get one, the other one is either missing or stuck behind somewhere. Yes please show some pictures that would be great! It's an all grey/black interior.

You guys arnt suppose to be the voice of reason! The more and more I think about it, Im wanting to mod this car less and less. You are right, I should just get the old girl going if I want to feel real boost.

The car is just too damn slow right now though. It really needs just a few tasteful mods. I dont really want to cut up this beautiful front bumper for a FMIC. Ive been looking at big SMIC's and that seems like a dead end unless I want to fab one. Im not rushing into this one, Im going to think this build through!

Man if only there was a way to video document this process.

Maybe have a cool voice over and an intro. And put it on YouTube too.

That’d be cool.

Ha, I needed that kick in the pants, thanks :D I actually did do all of that for the headliner/sunroof. It's just not on youtube yet. I'm getting 52 videos queued up so I can release 1 per week for a whole year. If I really bust my ass the next 3 months I should be able to start releasing vids again. No promises though LOL

Turn the washer reservoir in the hatch into a meth injection tank. You can easily skip a big FMIC this way. That's what I'm going to be doing.

I saw this car listed for sale as well and it looked like a great deal, seems like that was true! With having such a clean example, it is definitely tempting to just want to leave the car very stock, but do it how you want the car to be. I couldn't stand how painfully slow my 99 gsx was in stock form either, but just a few boltons and a different BOV help a ton to at least let you feel some sort of torque. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on your build thread!

There was a guy commenting saying he should have asked more for the car... I was like shush don't tell him that! I had to be quick, and luckily he worked with me since I was 6 hours away. If I didn't get someone else was 5 mins behind me.

It seemed like too good of a deal, but so far I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. I'm going to focus on getting the paint/interior and maintained squared away first. I also started to order some parts for my 97, to get that one up and going.

The last week I continued the maintaince and did a couple little upgrades while It's been so nice.

The Tcase output shaft seal appeared to be leaking, so while it was out I did both of the seals and some Redline heavy shockproof. The oil looked terrible, so I'll probably change the oil again soon. I also did the rear diff aswell.

I also did MT90 in the trans, and did some shifter bushings. This might be the single best thing to do on a DSM. The trans pretty much shifts itself now. Night and day difference.

1000001176.jpg

1000001183.jpg

And did a valve cover gasket, it was seeping a little. Did an OEM half moon instead of the rubber one. I'm impressed with how the head looks. Very clean inside.

1000001186.jpg

My brother come out for a visit to help install my exhaust. He is a very talented welder. He helped me extend my STM downpipe and cut off the Thermal R&D 2.5 flange for a vband connection.

1000001184.jpg

I found a cheap injen intake pipe but it came with the nipples cut and welded shut, so I'll need to delete some emissions and the boost solenoid before I can install it. Maybe I'll just put a breather filter on the valve cover as well. So for now I just installed a maf adapter and new filter. Tomorrow I have to take it to town and have the sherrif do a VIN inspection and get the car registered. I'm also going to stop at a body shop and get quote for repainting the side strakes, spoiler and a set of 2ga twisty sideskirts. That's it for now!

I got a little bit done this super bowl Sunday. I replaced both of the drip rails with some good used ones. Way better then the completely shot ones that were on it. Old vs new.
1000001200.jpg

I also picked up a new set of rims and tires. The car looks sooo much better in my opinion. They are 17x8.5 Motegi traklites with 235 50R17. She needs lowered a little but still looks way better.

I havnt done a whole lot to her in the last few months. I've been very busy at work planting corn, and preoccupied with my other DSM.

Last weekend I completely gutted the interior. Pressure washed the carpet and detailed everything I could. I also replaced the black door handle with an oem one I paint matched. I also repainted the side strakes. Hard to match 26 year old paint but it looks much better.

I used a cerekote headlight restoration kit and I think it turned out very good. I would recommend. I also used their trim coat product which is magic as well.

1000001381.jpg

That's it for now. I still am very undecided on what route I'm going with this car... for now I'm gathering parts to restore the suspension and brakes.
