I recently bought 2 gsx's auto's. I just got them yesterday to the house. did a look over , rotated engine over by hand to make sure there were no issues there. removed valve cover and watch valve so looked like no issue there too. has spark to all 4. have not done a fuel pressure check yet. did a compression check and all cylinders came to 60 psi exactly, yes all 4 had the same pressure. this is a bone stock 7 bolt. I shove my snapon borescope down cylinder and did not see anything out of the ordinary. at this point it leads me to believe that it has jumped time. thoughts?

the valves seem to not be bent i should have been able to see with the bore scope also noticed it with the valve cover off and engine turning over. the 60psi straight across the board with all plugs pulled and throttle body held wide open leads me to believe skipped timing so far. but i value and thank u for your insight

If you think the timing has skipped why don't you put the timing marks on their correct spot and look for yourself
cause i work 12 hour days and have 5 kids didnt get cars in till late sunday and will do exactly that-look for myself, this weekend. i was just hitting other up for some more info and some out of the box thinking

actually both cars dont run but was told black one stopped running for no reason and the green one popped the balance belt will try to get a good look at both this weekend, but my 94 tsi with a 6 bolt runs. i have engines already if need be for both cars but want to use in case of something else happens

Doubt it's the headgasket. Usually you'd have a cylinder or two much lower than the others with a blown headgasket.

I also doubt it's bent valves with it making that much compression. It's possible but they'd have to have been just barely kissed.

I expect you to find the exhaust cam retarded about 2 teeth with #1 at TDC.

cam gears line up correctly. with that said i put a dowel down #1 piston and watched it, and it was not at tdc when cam gears are aligned it actually comes up 2 teeth approx before the cam gears line up.

with what u said i verified both gears to be 2 teeth retarded. so when i completely verify tomorrow (witch i am now more positive) that it will be off i will be sure that u were the winner. thank u sometime i forget the old tricks i used, been a hevy mech for 15 plus years now and have been wrenching for over 26 years

Just curious how u were able to come to that conclusion?

I had 90 psi in #3 & #4 cylinders. 3 intake valves were out of round as you can see in the pic below.

i do trust my instincts but any mechanic that tells you he knows everything is the same mechanic that knows nothing, So i came her to just post the qquestion and hopefully other may learn from it. "The more I learn the dumber I feel" (a quote that i love) plus i love learning more specifics about these cars, as of now i have a total of 4 of them. 94 talon, 94 eclipse, 97 & 98 eclipse's

I was going to say the valves ARE bent. you'll still get compression readings if the valves are bent. On one you said the balance shaft belt snapped which more than likely it has altered the Timing belt in some way. Whether it snapped or jumped teeth. Double check the mechanical timing on both cars, If they are both in time then you Definitely need to remove the heads and have them worked.

balance belt issue is on the 97(green one) not this one that we have been discussing

i can tell right now i already know the black 98 has jumped 2 teeth like said earlier but will make complete positive conformation later-- when i get it started i will shut it of and do a complete timing belt kit on it.

Reset the timing and see how it runs or, reset the timing and check compression again. If its zero or low compression its head built time.

well it all a moot point at this time as went to take crank pulley off and was able to move entire crank well more than 1/4 of an inch in n out. so when i get to it it will be time to pull the engine
