I was at a dead stop with the e-brake up at a friends house and noticed my Blackberry was about to die [go figure]. I had previously taken the center console out to repair the short shifter and still had everything unplugged as was the head unit still not in. I shuffled through the wiring to find the 12V for the cigarette lighter and heard a zap. Instantly, the car started idling VERY rough. I immediately turned it off. About half hour later, I went to start it and it wasn't having it. It cranked but wouldn't fully start. I checked all the fuses and they all seem fine both in the cabin and in the engine bay. I'll take pictures of what touched what in a couple minutes, but a friend pointed out the FPR was reading 0 when it was cranking. The wire that touched the exposed metal on the back of the cigarette lighter were colored: solid white, solid black, yellow with black lines, red with white stripes. It was a 4-pronged connecter with all 4 prongs in a line. Like I said, I checked the fuses and relays and all seemed to be fine, but not sure where else to look? I would guess it may be the fuel pump that shorted out and isn't in operation or possibly the ECU? Any ideas would be a great help. Or, help in person can result in some beer in pizza.

Check the MFI/MPI relay, you probably shorted it out... 95-96 MFI/MPI relay The location is the same but it won't look the same on your car since yours is a '98, it will be two black relays on one bracket. Try swapping them between the connectors and see if the "no start" changes...

:dsm:

I tried to over-ride them but using a fused wire. I saw how to jump them. Do all signals point to the relays?

MPI relay comes on before the fuel relay. Check the fuses and check that pin 12 & 25 arent getting 12V with the key to on.

Does it make sense for a fuel pump to die with an electrical shock like that? And before I thought I heard snapping from those relays. Now I don't hear anything. I was told you weren't supposed to hear a snap. Possibly the two relays are shot? If the car still won't start with new relays, what could the other option be?

No. Those relays should click. Thats the relay working when you hear that noise.

So I assume I would need to replace those two relays and check the one by the pump as well?
