97 Tsi AWD - 95 transmission?

Hey, I have a question.
I am picking up a 97 AWD with a blown transmission. I have a 95 GSX just sitting there (with a blown motor).

I have been searching about swapping over the transmission and I am finding 2 different answers.

Can I swap just the 95 Transmission+Tcase to the 97? Or do I have to swap over the rear diff as well?

Reply, just the spline count on the output shaft is different by one. You could match one to the other, if you really wanted you can pull the end case off the trans, then 5th and reverse and the center diff and swap shafts. Rear diffs will not be effected.

You just need to match the transfercase with the transmission as the 97-99 used a slightly different front diff ratio, and used different transfercase gearing to match it to the rearend.

You need to match a 95-96 transmission with a 95-96 tranfer case. Same with 97-99. The rear diffs on the manual 2g DSM's are the same ratio for all 2g cars and does not need to be swapped. Same with the automatics. The rear diff only needs to be swapped if going from auto to manual or vise versa.

as most said tranny and tcase need to be from the same car... 95-96 gearing is different from the other years. but as lond as they are together there will be no problems

Probably.. I even have a spare engine for the GSX. But, the 95 needs body work and paint. I want to do that before I put in another engine. I have no cash for that so I will just swap the transmissions for now
