96 tsi awd crank walk?

Im new to the dsm scene and i just purchased a 96 talon tsi awd while i was home on leave. i know a little bit about dsm's but not much. i picked the car up for 2500 off from a buddy of mine. the car has a quite a few modifications to it and is in mint condition. the only thing is that it cranked walked. which i know the motor is going to either have to be completely rebuilt and get the block machined if it isnt in to bad of shape or get a new block. so i was looking for some guide lines or to be pointed in a direction i should go with this. im not worried about time or money. im more concerned with building a reliable motor that can put out quite abit of hp. so if anyone can give me any insight on how to go about this i would greatly appreciate it thanks.

Are you sure it walked? Unbolt the transfercase and put a dial indicator on the flywheel and physically measure the end play.

If it really did walk the rule of thumb is not to use that block or crank.

Are you positive it's crank walked? Have you confirmed that by measuring?

Or are you just assuming, like most people do, who end up being wrong?

im just going by what my buddy had told me, when i bought the car he already had the engine pulled out and completly stripped down to the block. he had planned on building a motor for it but couldnt afford to. so i took it off his hands before i realized im kinda in over my head when it comes to dsm's

go get the block checked out first of all if you can use it then go get it hottanked and bored by a good trusted shop id look around and talk to people before going to a shop though.

The engine probably didn't crankwalk. If it did, there's no way you'd be re-using the crank, and there's a good chance you wouldn't be re-using the block as well.

This is how far it can go if you don't know about it until the crank is slopping around enough to cause clutch problems.
