96 talon tsi not holding water

I rescued a 1996 eagle talon tsi awd 5 speed from the crusher at the junkyard.
It runs and drives. No noises from transmission.
All lights work. Body's in great condition.
Interior is decent. Im trying to figure out why the car was
sold for scrap. The owner knew what the car was (there's an
autometer guage inside, and all interior panels repainted).
the only reason I can figure is the engine won't hold water.
As your filling the radiator up,
the water flows just as fast out of these fittings near the
alternator. It appears that there was originally hoses
attached and they've simply been removed. The fittings are connected to
some kind of aluminum pipe running horizontally parallel to the radiator.
Is there even supposed to be water in that pipe?
Does this indicate major engine damage?
What are your thoughts, opinions, and questions.
I have pictures. Im new to the 4g63 engine, as well as to fuel injection
and forced induction. I registered on this site in
2011 in anticipation of owning a DSM one day and that day has come!

I'm not quite sure of where you are talking about. If the two " fittings" are by the oil filter than yes those are waterlines. There should be a small rubber hose aprox five to four inches ping that connects the two. That hose often blows out or at least it did on mine. Our oil filter housings have coolant running through it.
 
He might be talking about the water pipe behing the turbo coming out of the water pump. There is a barb fitting that should have a rubber hose running down to the oil cooler on the filter housing
 
The fitting is on a pipe that runs behind the exhaust manifold. And there are at least 2 fittings leaking water. It seems to me that it would take something more serious than that to send this thing to the junkyard though. OK, so I need to connect these fittings then. So, the fitting near the top connects to the oil filter housing?
 
You have to take the manifold off to get to it. It would be easier to see what is missing anyway. I have had the main tube crack on me too. Get it holding antifreeze and then run it and find out what is wrong with it.
 
Is it safe to run it with the fittings plugged (no water cooling the oil?) This is a completely stock motor as far as I can tell and hear (even has stock style muffler!) And the fittings aren't leaking, they don't have anything attached to them, so naturally they are releasing any water I pour in.

Are you talking about the water pipe that attaches to the water pump? Theres a nipple there, close to the thermostate housing side and thats for the turbo. But this pipe is mostly used on 1g motors. Pictures of the fittings would be great to post. Will be easier for us to help you.

Just plug them and you should be OK, This advice is not for you to drive it daily, It is just to drive it and find out what's going on with the car, But after you figure it out, YOU SHOULD FIX THE PROBLEM.

This is only a temporary remedy to be able to drive it and see what the car is doing.

Obviously, this is thinking that you are talking about the oil cooler lines, A pic would help a tons.
 
Wait I hope he isn't talking about water lines running to the turbo. Ok look at the turbo and at the bottom of it does it curve to the left then out the fender or does it do something different. It's possible that it could have an oil cooled turbo on it and the guy never blocked off the coolant passages.
 
Check what lines you have.

If the lines are for the oil cooler, you can plug them with out a problem, If they are going to the turbo, You can plug them as well, But only temporary (for a test).

Personally, I wouldn't start the car unless im a 100% sure all lines hooked up the right way. Seen many people mis understand and mix oil with water lines. You don't want that to happen. I advice you to go over each line and make sure they are in the right place. Pictures will make it alot easier for us to lead you to the right path.

This is the fitting with no hose on it. I had to crop it so it would upload. I can get lower quality (smaller file size) photos later. That is the alternator on the right. There is also another fitting farther down but you cant see it in this pic.

This nipple has to go down to the oil cooler, where the oil filter housing is. You will see two of these nipples somewhere around the filter. One has to go in it, and the other one has to be hooked up to a metal hose ( usually rusty) where it takes it up to the thermostate housing.

Thats the water line for the oil cooler.

Just plug it or rout it back to the oil cooler.

x2. I would just plug the oil coolers arn't very helpful on these cars, Just another thing to go wrong. The was I see it was marketing saying "water cooled". Later down the line you can get a different OFH with ports for an air-cooled set up.
