Hi everybody. I'm new to this forum, and have a question. I know that the 96 ESi and TSi engines are different, but is it possible to just put a TSi turbo on an ESi? Or, could I just put the TSi internals into an ESi? Thanks in advance for the input.

turbo yes it is possible, you'll probably find easier a t3/t4 exhaust manifold and you'll need an adapter plate to mate the mitsu flange, I believe hahn racing sells one that will work, but internals are completely different and will not work, there are alot of threads on building a 420at, I built my own kit for less then 400 minus intercooler piping that was all I was missing with a 20g turbo from hahn racing

Possible, yes....but a huge pain in the ass.

Or, could I just put the TSi internals into an ESi?
Absolutely not.

You're talking about two different engines by two different manufacturers....would you use Ford pistons in a Chevy?

people do use chevy valve train parts in some ford motors, thou.

So it's POSSIBLE, but it wouldn't be worth it. I found an ESi for $800, it is in pristine condition. This is the only reason I mention it. Should I take advantage of the cheap price, and make a project car out of it, or wait to find a TSi, which is already turbo'd and work with that instead?

you really can mix and match 420 parts and 4g parts.

before anyone else pipes in their "you must buy a TURBO" lines...

The 420A engine can be made to have plenty of fun with. $800 for a pristine car is a great deal. You won't be able to find an unmolested TSi/GST/GSX for anywhere near that kind of money.

There's plenty of info here and at 2gnt.com on how to turbo a 420A for less than you'd spend on a good running GST/TSi FWD.

and AFAIK the only parts from a 4G63 that can be used on a 420A is the valve springs, injectors can be made to work with the addition of a resistor pack also.

What do you mean by in pristine condition? Like is it in good running condition if it is then its a deal for $800, but why is it being sold that cheap, something is gotta be up with it.

IMO, i say ditch the n/a and search for a clean TSi or 4g63T equipped dsm. Your gonna be dumping way to much money in the 420a that its not worth it.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I have gone and looked at it, and it starts, runs, no dents, never wrecked, everything works. I drove it, and nothing sounds wrong or bad or anything. The person that's selling it though is an older lady. So there's where the cheap price comes in. She is just looking to sell it. I figured I would get some input from you DSM guys and see if you think that 420a would be worth doing anything to, or just wait and find a TSi for a little bit more.

Well if thats a case, and its a good runner i would say buy it as a DD or winter beater but i see your in Lousiana. Yeah the 420a is not even worth dumping money into. But $800 for a good runner is a deal.

That's the same engine that's in the green eclipse in the first fast and furious. That car was pretty fast without a turbo LOL.

I agree. Non-turbo engine can be tons of fun and still pretty quick. If you are new to dsm then this is then this is a good engine to learn on. Although it is not the 4g63, you can still learn a lot about your engine and learning modifications to DSMs. I first learned learned on a 1991 eagle talon N/T. It was extremely fun learn about the car, and it was even cooler when I got a 1991 Eagle Talopn AWD. There are basic modifications that can be found on this website for upping you H. A better intake and filter, a more free flowing exhaust, etc. Basic things. heres a link N/T Engines

whats the budget that you want to work with? You can get an engine swap if you have the money. Or you can upgrade you 420a engine with a turbo and such. Turbos are definitely more, and you will learn quickly BOOST IS ADDICTING, but they are a lot more work and money!
