93 Talon won't start

I have a 93 talon tsi which i bought recently for $700. now i checked and rechecked everything ie sensors, plugs, timing, etc.. I also put in a used but good ECU. (it needed a ECU when i bought it). The car will crank and start but either ends up dying or run rough.
To get it to start I give it some gas and it will run then idle low or die. while pressing on the accelerator pedal the engine will start making a tapping noise. i checked the timing cover and it was broke so i replaced it. now it just sounds like something is rubbing. It sounds like plastic so i am pretty sure it is not the rod bearings.

When i orginally inspected the car I notice the spark plug firing sequence was way off. so i corrected them but still the same result.

could it be the coil or a sensor? if not what else could it be?

the car has not been modified besides a K&N filter.

I bought this as a winter car while i build my 99 GSX.

check the coil resistor... do you smell fuel when you try to start it?

First things you ALWAYS check first are 1>spark 2>fuel

Air is usually a given, but it doesnt hurt to check after checking the first 2.... check each spark plug to see if its firing... pull it out and plug it in to the wire... make sure its not grounding on the chassis anywhere... DO NOT TOUCH IT... and have someone crank the car and you watch to see if it sparks.... you will notice if it does... check all of them like that.... after that, if thats cool... start checking fuel... get a haynes.. it will tell you how to check your whole car for anything...
 
well i know i am getting spark because when i crank it over and press the accelerator cable it will start and run but when i let off the pedal it will idle low or die. same goes with the fuel i know i am getting fuel too. it does not start smoothly or on the first crank

A fuel pump could also not be sending the needed pressure, or not enough fuel period. You have checked spark, and with spark you need enough fuel to run the car. Relieve the fuel pressure system, and start it back up. If the car wont even start. You found your problem. If its not the pump it will do the same thing.
*EDIT* To relieve the fuel system pressure, unplug the fuel pump and take the gas cap off, start the car and let it die (1 -2 seconds of running usually) Plug the pump back in and then start the car.

As for the rubbing, check the entire space around the timing cover, as It goes around the entire side of the motor, and the firewall side of the cover usually gets caught up, or is not alligned right. Fix that quick because it will rip your belt apart. Good luck dude!
 
well i changed the spark plug and fix the tapping noise. now i got the car to start but it is running rough. i can free rev it up to 2500-3000 rpm and it smooths out. but when i let off the pedal the rpms drop quickly and then dies. I can start it back up again but as before it runs rough.
 
could it be a ECU problem? Will a 95 ECU work on a 93 for test purposes? thanks

but could it be the ECU being the problem?..when i bought the car it did not have a ECU. I put in a 6262 ECU and it starts but the idle is rough.
 
It could be the Idle Speed Motor (ISC) these control the idle and when they go wrong the idle tends to wander and sometimes cause it to stall. You can interchange it with the one from your 2G, it's bolted to the throttle body - read into it some more.

You could have bought a faulty ecu - was there a warranty with it?
