This is a build I previously documented and thought I would shall with you all....
Well I figured since I finally had some time, I would sit down and start this thread about my passion.....my 1G Eclipse. Okay, it all started when I had my very first car gave to me back in high school (2003). It was a very underpowered (1.8L), high mileaged, faded black '93 Eclipse. I never thought I would be so greatly attached to this car since it was not much to look at and was so slow that I didn't even try to race anyone. As time went by, it started to grow on me and soon comes the endless funding. Since a relative of mine had a mobile electronics shop, I started out by putting in a stereo system. I hung out at his shop a lot and helped him with installations and sales. He taught me a lot and gave me a bunch of experience. I was also studying electronic engineering at the time. So with all the experience and knowledge I had, I went ahead and installed a setup in my 1g that was easy on my wallet and made sure to vibrate the mirror of the car next to me. I used all Memphis Car Audio equipment cause I believe they have superior performance and quality. All I had was two 12's and a 1000w class D amp. Ended up getting first place in my first SPL contest. Lots of people just try to buy the biggest sized subs and amps they can without any knowledge of how the equipment works which leads to the equipment not being matched properly which leads to poor performance. Well even though you could hear me coming a mile away, the car still didn't look good when it showed up. So $2500 later, I had a full new black paint job (with an added spoiler from a GSX), 18" ICW wheels and coilovers. My black interior is in near mint condition but had those cheap looking cloth seats. One day I was in the local junk yard looking for something and I came across and totaled 1g talon tsi. For the heck of it, I took a look inside and could not believe what I saw....mint black leather seats (driver, passenger, and rear). Picked them up on the spot for $100. I put a lot of miles on my 1.8 driving back and forth to college while it looked like this....

I've never seen an engine this reliable. It would never die no matter how much abuse you could throw at it. For 200k miles, not a thing was changed. It was stock.....from the factory. That was until the water pump leaked and caused the timing belt to snap. The funny thing is that it snapped right on the timing mark even though its a non-interference engine. As more time and miles went by, it started burning more and more oil. I knew it was getting time. After lots of research, I got the confidence to do a transplant. Luckily I'm highly mechanically inclined. I've always had the goal to go to a 2.0T so it seemed like a good time to park it and get started. Don't worry, I had this to keep me entertained.....

I bought this after I sold my SVT Cobra which the Cobra is another story....
I knew I wanted a full parts car to do this swap in order to make it easier. I had to find one with a battered up body cause I didn't want to destroy a decent DSM for this project. I searched the ads and found a '94 Talon tsi FWD with a 6 bolt and a 2G tranny. Exactly what I needed. Since the price was cheap I knew it wasn't gonna be in good shape which was okay for what I needed. I drove 600 miles to where it was and drove it 600 miles back. It had issues on the way like not fully boosting and an oil leak from the turbo oil return line to the oil pan. Here it is...

When I got it home, I couldn't believe it actually made it that far. It was rigged up like crazy. Too many things I can't describe. I like to do everything proper and hated seeing things half assed like missing bolts and major vacuum leaks. Oh well. Time to get started.....

All ripped out...

Putting the 2G tranny to the side for now...

Looks to be a 6 bolt to me...

Finally on the stand...

Now I've already done a compression test before I pulled the motor out. Dry test showed 130, 130, 130.....90. Wet test showed 130, 130, 130, 130. Looks like bad rings so far. Now I know I've gotta strip the motor down....

Upon taking it apart, I realize I need to get a new timing cover (due to damage from improper installation), timing belt and related components, oil pump, 02 sensor and other misc. stuff that I was pretty much gonna replace anyways. It already has the balance shaft eliminator. Every part I'm taking off that can be powder coated, I have been powder coating. I grind everything smooth to have a nice finish. I plan on doing the fuel rail, exhaust manifold cover, and cam gears in black chrome. The valve cover and intake manifold in chrome and other smaller components and brackets in gloss black. I'll also be doing the motor mounts in gloss black since I'm swapping out the busted factory inserts with polyurethane inserts. Plan on painting the engine bay gloss black also...starting to sense a pattern here. Yeah I pretty much like to murder out every vehicle I own. All the cars I have gotten have been black. Also the motor I got had a freaking Hyundai valve cover on it since he said the old one got damaged some how so thats what he replaced it with. I went on Ebay and found one of the more rare valve covers that actually says Mitsubishi on it.....

Should look good after I get it powder coated. I've already powder coated some things and will take some pics as soon as I can. Right now as it sits I have the wiring harness from the talon pulled and the computer w/fuel pump relay. Need to take a few more things off the block so I can take it to a machine shop and see what can be done to it. I know it needs to be cleaned cause there is some type of radiator stop lead all in it and I'm hoping that it just needs to be honed cause the cylinder walls looked good except for the one I'm having a problem with which has slight pitting on the walls. I've got prothane mounts, 02 sensor, EGR block off plate, and a front mount intercooler kit all ordered for now. The intercooler kit will help also in replacing all that old soft piping and the restricive 1g throttle body elbow. I also ordered a data logging kit I came across for a good price. The oil leak I had before was because the oil pan was dented where the oil return line bolts to it so I've got an oil pan on the way too. I'll be starting to take the Eclipse apart soon. This is what it looks like for now...

You can see the wheels have been takin off and replaced with the stock ones. I need to get the tires replaced is why. Probably gonna go with a larger set of tires since the ones on there now are 215/35R18.
Here is a couple of pictures of some things I already powdercoated...

Here is a before shot of the mounts I did last night...

They were busted pretty bad and the guy before me tried to fill in the mounts with silicone or something? Here they are after prepping, powdercoating, and adding the prothane inserts...

This powdercoating stuff takes a lot of time but is well worth it in the end. Don't have to worry about rust anymore thats for sure.

The first one was so bad that it no longer has an oil port because of the pieces of metal. Looks like I gotta get a new head and cams. I'm gonna have fun finding a 1G turbo head and cams that came out of a DSM with a manual transmission since there is a difference in the cams between a DSM with a MT and an AT.
