I am going on my third ac/alt belt in two months. Also this is my 2nd alt in 3 months. This last alt has lasted fine but I keep burning up belts. The car always starts by screaching the belt and you can smell it. It will run at about 12.1-12.5 on the volts while it is screeching. When screeching goes away volts jump up to 13.7-14.2 depending on how much throttle. Weird part is this is not just at startup. If I am stopped at a light and I pull out the screeching comes back sometimes, when I turn my wheel it comes back sometimes. The belt has always broken while it was screeching.

When I bought the car (92 talon 4g63 turbo) it had a newer underdive pulley on it. Could this be my problem? I thought that a smaller pulley would turn the belt faster and might go through belts faster. Would a stock pulley solve the problem (suggested by a friend)

Any help would be great, and Thanks in advance.:talon:

If it's the AC and Alternator belts, then it is very likely that it is your crank(which in your case is an underdrive) pulley/harmonic balancer. Since they are the only two that run directly off of the crank pulley.

Replace it with a stock one. They have a rubber dampener and you're underdive doesn't. Also make sure your belts are not too tight or too loose.

Thanks for the help, I was pretty sure that was the problem. I see in the pic you don't have a timing belt cover, I usually don't run with one. Have you had any problems??

I run all the timing belt covers except the top one. I have never had a problem. Plus I can always see the condition and tightness of it.

That why I leave mine off to. I think its easier to keep an eye on.

Anyone want an underdrive pulley? :p

I would make sure your belts are tight enough. Most people I have found just don't run them tight enough for a serpentine. Also, it will depend on what brand you run but some belts will have to be retightened after they have been run for a while. Dayco I can tell you is one I have had to adjust a lot.

I only use Gates and it seems that I have to do at least 2 adjustments before they settle in. The underdrive pulley may be causing your tensioner to hit its upper limit and not tightening the belt properly. I've not seen one in person, but I would at least look at the possibility.

Good LUck
