Ok, i have looked and cant find an answer. I was sitting at a stop sign, and when i started to accelerate in 1st, it made a big clunk, it still moves just fine, and all the gears seem to work, but makes a clunking knock9ng noise once it starts moving. I havent checked the oil yet, because its too dark. Anybody know what this might be??

ok, so there seems to be more metal than oil in the tranny, and now it wont go into 3rd or 4th gear, 1,2,5,r all work fine, but 3 and 4 will work maybe 1/100 times.

synchros dude and if it wont go into the gears at all even when its shut off you broke a shift fork......if you find out for sure thats what it is go to jackstransmissions.com and they have everything you need i thought it was a janky sight at first but its ligit and there shift forks are alot better than stock dsm ones. Or get another tranny if you cant rebuild them!!!

Every transmission n00b on here says synchros for everything, you could have your trans fall out of your car and 70% of the replys would be "synchros dude". :toobad:

No... if there's metal something else happened, may have lost a bearing... hard to tell. Needless to say time to rebuild or find another trans...

^^^ 100% correct, If your fluid is nice and gold then yeah your synchros are worn, but that does not mean that is your clunk. Could be the motor mount for all we know, your description, as obvious as you are trying to make it is not that obvious.

Check to make sure your mounts are good.
Does it do this only in first or if you shift hard?
Desribe any other trans noises.

Darren

Theres nothing to debate here, more than likely you need a new transmission, end of story. Sounds like a bearing failure to me, as thats pretty much EXACTLY what my car did when one of the countershaft bearings blew apart. The only gear the car would stay in for more than .0002 seconds was 4th.

HAHA....Funny to say that 80 percent of the time thats all it is or like the other number one cause broken shift forks cause these are notorious for that cause there are these little nylon notchs on them that wear off and then you get alot of play between gears and it will start to grind or it wont go in....or even the teeth on the gears that the synchro grabs are rounded off and wont grab the gear. Should think bout who you call a noob because i actually work on my own shit:ohdamn:...........check the fluid and see its a bronze color or has copper looking flakes in it. That means synchros are bad.

My DSM transmission doesn't have nylon inserts on the shift forks. Mine's from a 91 Talon TSi AWD; are the inserts a later revision?

Must be an awd thing?(unless colts are awd idk) Or maybe someone rebuilt your tranny before, my shift forks where original and they where the dumbest design i had to go out in the same day. The cast ones i have now are all one piece and i havent had a problem with them yet.

If he can't get the gear at all, it obviously isn't the synchros. Which by the way do not "grab the little teeth on the gears". You obviously have little knowledge of the actual functionality like most here.

I appreciate all the help, I pulled the tranny out and tore it apart, it was a broken shift fork, and the piece of the shift fork took some gear teeth with it. Looks like im doing a rebuild. Thanks again guys.:thumb:

Hahaha Really funny because I've rebuilt three trannys now and none of them have had a single problem. Sure I may not be the best a describing how it works with my own words but I sure as hell know how a transmission functions. And I say with confidence that I know more about trannys than half the people on this sight no affense to anyone it's just this guy sounds like a real tool!! Any one can read off the internet.
