Airdrie,
Hey,

I would eventually like to get some HID's for my Laser but I heard that HID's don't work well with Euro style diamond back headlamp housings(or any other h4 conversion lights). So I never really persued the idea.... But then I heard that projecter style headlight conversions were available for the 4x6 style sealed beam headlights. So I did some searching... and found these:

From what I understand, the projecters work better for HID's as opposed to the regular H4 conversion because the projecter won't fragment the light and shine it every where like the other style conversions. The light beam is better focused by the projecter.

So if this is true what kind of HID light bulb kit would I be looking for? (eg/ 9006,9004,etc.)

Let me know...

Thanks

no no no, won't work. I bet if you buy those, they will specificly say on them, "not for use with High intensity discharge lighting" (or some engrish bastardization thereof) thats because the projectors for HIDs have cut off shields behind them, the projector only serves to invert the light pattern, and spread it. also, those projectors, are made with sub-par parts. The glass will have all kinds of bubbles, and flaws in it. Perfectly fine for halogen, because halogen is meant to be just put out everywhere, but with HID it will be no good. Ive seen several sets of "projector" headlights (for both 2g's and many differnet hondas) and they all have really shitty projector lenses.

I would imagine that if you had those projector housings you could more easily swap a pair of HID projectors in there.

I was looking at the tech article about how to swap in HID projectors on the 2g's so maybe it can work after some swapping around. But I'll have to get a closer look at the 1g projecter headlights.

i know this is an old thread but i have hids on my 90 gsx.and its such an easy install ,took me about 10 minutes.and their fukin bright as shit.so bright i see the squierrels in the trees covering their eyes man
can we get some day and night pics?I've been lookin into this myself and am pretty curious.also thinking of adding halos into the mix. :p

I'm still considering the idea... I saw a post a while back about retrofitting some "HID specific" projector lights from an Audi or Saab (I can't remeber for sure), that have the "cut off" built into them, into a 92-94 style headlight housing.

I don't see why you couldn't take apart these replacement style projectors and put in the proper designed HID projectors. It will probably be expesive, but at least they will function properly.

91eagle_tsi_awd - I'd like to see some pictures of your HID set up as well, please.

As would I. If it only took you 10 minutes and you can see squirrels, I worry.

Since DSM's never came with HID, either projector or reflector style, the only proper way to do it would be to transplant the assembly from a car that did have HID. You could either try to stick a projector into one of those rectangular style headlights and make sure the glass on the unit is very smooth, or try to frankenstein some reflector style unit into there, again making sure the glass is very smooth. I don't even think a projector would fit, not to mention look quite odd. And I don't know too much about reflector type HID, although Mercedes uses them. But buying some kit off of ebay for 49.99 and drilling into your stock headlight is guaranteed trouble.

I did my H4 conversion earlier this summer when I installed my intercooler. As a result, I had to remove one my fog lights to run a pipe! :notgood: Being weary of ebay units and poor quality, I did some research for alternatives in lighting. I came across some conversion kits made by Pilot. (Part number WI-HL6A) It utilizes 9003/H4 bulbs. They are D.O.T. and S.A.E. approved housings. The glass is flat and they didn't have bubbles in them. I got them for $40 and I ordered them through Kragens. I also used some H4 bulbs that they had in the store, which cost aruond $10 bucks a piece. There is a significant difference in light output from the Halogen sealed beam units. The new housings are brighter than having both my headlights and foglights together. The reflectors in the back are also very well designed in that they don't blind oncoming traffic, and they have the light that "shines to the right" for street signs. I couldn't be happier for the price that i paid. :thumb: I highly recomend them to anyone that owns a dsm with the factory lighting in them. In terms of harness adapters, I used some $3.00 "utilty harness" plugs from Kragens. I simply cut them and crimped some spade connectors to them to adapt them to the factory harness. Total cost was right around $70 - A very worthy investment for safety and driving visibility at night. Here are some pics.

I worry that the word HID is being thrown around here, without much thought being given to whether or not it is the proper term. 91eagle_tsi_awd, did you have to install a custom wire harness to power the 2 ballasts? Did you have ballasts? Or did you just put some new bulbs in?

Just checking man. A lot of people think that those "cool blue xenon" bulbs from pep boys are the same as a real HID setup, when the truth is that they are nothing alike.

I wanted HID's once.... and well.. if you check my profile i ended up doing a 92-94 frount end conversion just so i can have 1gb HID's heh.. personally i think it was worth the work, i'm not 2 much of a fan of popups so it seemed like a good idea. It also opened up alot of different options such as hood, fenders, kit.. etc.. if i would've known about these 1ga popup HID's i would've saved myself about 2k in conversion parts ROFL
