Hey everyone, Im just deciding on what to do here. I have two dsms. One is a 1g gst and the othe a 2g gsx. I purchased both from a friend. One torn apart(the 2g) and the other had a slipped tb. The 1g got a new head and allot of aftermaket goodies in the rebuild and I have been using it as a daily. The 2g has tons of parts and is all aprt. Well I want to build the 2g quick and use that as my daily and continue to build up the 1g. Here is my problem on a motor build. The 2g motor is completly apart. It has a spun rod bearing. I have which came with the car eagle 1g h beam rods in a box with 1g pistons pressed on them. The rods have been cut down to fit the 2g 7 bolt crank. Why somebody did this I dont know. I can only assume my buddy read a thread on 1g factory rods being stronger and wasted the money on getting 1g h beams cut to the 7 bolt when the same rods from the same company for the 2g would cost the same without the machine work. Anyways. I want to save as much money putting this motor together with what I have for it already. I am goig to but a stock crank with bearings for it. i have everything ecxept the crank. will I run into a problem running 1g pistons in the 2g block? Do i need to use 2g rings on the 1g pistons? These pistons are arias cermacic coated 8.5.1 compression so I wont be stepping down on the comp ratio. I would like to save those pistons for my 1g 6bolt build I will be doing this winter but I dont want to do anymore machining to the rods to fit the 2g pistons. I have to bore the block .20 over for these 1g pistons and I dont mind a fresh bore as this car needs to be a daily driver for a long while.

Sorry my 1g is the gsx and the 2g is the gst.

You need to use the piston rings that go with the pistons. 2g pistons must have 2g rings, 1g pistons must have 1g rings. AND if you have aftermarket forged pistons you must by their rings because they arent the same as factory rings. As far as putting 1g pistons and rods in a 7 bolt motor i dont know if it is possible, i know you said you got the rods machined but i dont understand how they would make them work. I was thinking the difference was the width of where the rod connects to the crank but i may be wrong.

You are correct. Lets say you want to build a strong cheap 2g short block on a budget. You can score some used 1g rods and have the journals at the crank machined down to fit the 7 bolt crank. Its wider on the base of the 1g pistons. Then I guess there is some more machining involved into putting the 2g rpistons on those rods. I didnt have the rods machined. they came in a box with the paperwork and then i had to call and measure to figure out what I was holding in my hand. they are all 1g parts but the rod at the crank end has been cut down to the exact size as the 2g rods. like I said this was stupid because he could have saved the machine work and purchased the right parts for the engine. but i have them and want to use them since its a rare setup I may not be able to sell these 1g rods that are machined at the base for the 2g crank but not for the 2g pistons. People use the 2g pistons instaed of the 1gs in their 2g build ups because the 2g pistons have more comp ratio but these aftermarket pistons already have the same ratio as the 2gs, I have the rings that came with the pistons, i just didnt know if there is a difference in their placement that wouldny ride in the 2g block. On the other hand I would like not to bore the 2g block and just stuff stock internals into it then i could use those higher comp pistons in my 6 bolt winter engine build up but then i am stuck with these have machined 2g/1g rods that I probably cant sell. they are nice brand new rods. They wont fit my 6 bolt anymore. And if i wanted to sell them the buyer would need to get the wrist pin area machined to make them a full 2g rod with a 1g part number.
I have to buy a single rod and a crank for the 2g block because it spun one. Plus I sand blasted a piston which I believe is a bad Idea so I ont want to use that( Its a stock 2g piston not the aftermarket ones)
I could get a good stock used piston and rod from dsm graveyard for about 50.00 then a good stock crank with bearins for about 200.00 then align hone bore the cylinder walls and just build a good rebuilt short block and throw the new head I have on it and be done. Then I am left with these rods though. just trying to do it cheap with what i have but it looks like in the long run of thing just building the 2g back to stock may be the cheapest path.

Just an update. I am going to have my block align hone bored. the block is in ecxellent condition. no lip and the crosshatch marks are very clear and visible. I have ordered a stock crank with bearings and I ordered a single piston and rod from dsm graveyard. my cylinder head is still wrapped in a plastic bag from rebuild. Soooooo...the 2g is getting a stock engine. With bolt ons. I am using the 2g as a daily. Now I get to throw my 8.5.1 arias pistons in my 1g block. Still need to decide which crank and rods for that build.
