I just finished buying a 6bolt block and when I removed the oil pan...I see nearly 100 gold washers. Does anyone have any idea why someone would use so many washers on these bolts? Should I just remove them and go get some factory bolts?

I agree. It looks like someone ran down to the hardware store and picked up some cheap bolts and shimmed them with the washers. I would go with a set of new OEM bolts.

When you are removing them and installing the new ones, make sure to follow the same star pattern as you would for a head torque or wheel torque.

LOL LOL That is one of the funniest things I have ever seen on this board. I would take that whole block apart and check all bearing clearances at least the main caps off and see what kind of condition the bearings are in. The 6 bolt factory block main bolts have no washers. Take all that garbage out of there and install new factory main bolts (slowboy sells them among other places). I still cant get over why someone would do that. OMG

That is by far the most retarted thing ever, period.

Those are not stock main bolts. Stock main bolts are black and not as long as those.

The stock main bolts do not use any washers.

I will put money on the torque specs being wrong on these hardware store bolts, due to the amount of washers being used.

These are not nearly as strong as OEM bolts.

The strength and load capacity of these bolts has been significantly reduced b/c of the washers too.

Any time you put in new bolts or ARP main studs, the main journals need to be line honed to make sure the cleanances and surfaces are correct and true. Not line bored, just honed.

I strongly suggest replacing these w/ OEM or ARP hardware, and having it line honed as well as adding new bearings to be sure of no problems. And remember, Plastiguage is your friend!

That is not normal. Go get some factory or ARP studs like yesterday. Did the guy you bought it from claim it was running when he pulled it?

did that guy you bought it from honestly think he would get away with doing that? wow, i hope you showed him what you found and threatened somthing or asked for somthing at least. Thats just rediculous!

I ended buying the complete engine for $500. It was shipped down to me so I didn't have a chnace to look at the internals prior to sending the money. Everything else is in good conditon except for all these damn washers. 2G Head on a 6bolt block with 2G pistons.

Of course I threatened and he claims he's going to send me a FMIC and a 16G turbo so that I'll be happy, but we'll see about that. If he does, I can imagine the condition of the two.

Did he have the same color blue paint on the fence gate he took the bolts from to use in the engine?
Or are those just lag screws.

These cars are far too cheap.
Nice DEFIANT LOL

1fast97gsx: Thanks for the offer. I had a set of stock mains laying around, but I decided to buy some ARPs. Thanks :thumb:

wow.

Not as bad as the silconed motor i saw though. Not one gasket anywhere, just silcone galore. I think it was a VR6 motor out of a corrodo. Wow was that funny.
