Hello everyone this is my first post on here even though I have read many articles on this website. But anyways I have a 98 Eclipse GSX with about 75,000 miles on it and I havent seen any signs of crankwalk yet but I just dont feel like experiencing it so I am looking into doing the 6 bolt swap and I just wanted to know where everyone on here got their 6 bolt motors from and if they have had good experinces with them or bad experiences. Thanks in advance for any help.

If your motor isnt experiencing crankwalk then I would not worry about it. Your motor has pretty low miles and it should work for another 75000 miles. Yes its true the 7 bolt is known to crankwalk but not all do. I would wait till you blow your 7 bolt up before doing a swap. Most people find a 6 bolt in junk yards, it may take some time but you will get a way better deal than trying to buy one online or something like that.

So would I have more problems after doing the swap than I would if I just kept my current motor? I havent had too many problems with it yet. It does seem to have a lifter tick and I know someone before me had modded the car and then put it back to stock. Not quite sure what was done except for the ACT 2600 that was in there when I got it.

The only difference between the two blocks is that one experiences crankwalk more often. If you dont have a problem now, why try to fix it. Wait till you have a problem. The only problem is spending all the time for a swap when you dont need to do it.

if you know what you are doing, no, you shouldn't. if you've never swapped a motor than yes, possibly you could have more problems...although.

there are a lot of things that can be skimped on during the swap that can lead to more problems...for example 2g ecu/mas (unless you get a 1g) can give you random misfire CEL's which then requires dsmlink or some sketchy potentiometer modification (a problem i am currently dealing with).

probably better just sticking with what you have until it gives you trouble...you should notice if your motor starts to crankwalk at least a little before somethings gives. that's when i would start to consider the swap more...unless of course you have the money and feel like doing it.

I'm with everyone else, don't swap motors until you have an issue. The 6 bolt can be swapped in pretty easily but its not a direct "plug" in, as in there are some wiring issues etc. Crankwalk is pretty over rated, there is a poll on here for 2g's with crankwalk. I believe the total for all 2g's is just over 30% & the % of 98's that walked is the lowest around 7%. Depending on your build date you may have the "best" redesigned 3g lifters, which run the quietest, yours may just need to be cleaned.

Alright thanks, that just means more money to put into fixing up the motor. I just figured since it is my daily driver I would rather do the swap on my own terms before it happened rather than have a blown motor and then try to come up with the money while not having a car to drive. And lets say I end up having to do the swap later down the road and I have a bunch of aftermarket parts the only thing that really changes is the flywheel correct? So most of the bolt ons will still work?

exactly, youll know when it starts.

-alex, have you tried a 94 cas?

i haven't really read too much into the different CAS's yet, so no, i haven't yet. i unplugged my tps (maybe not the best idea) and it drives way different than with it plugged in (no hesitation or stumbling after a few minutes like with it in). i figured one of the ran misfire conditions is 80% throttle or less (i believe, something related to throttle posistion) and figure no TPS it doesn't know wtf is going on, no cel (i have other CEL's [evap solenoid], i lost my logger, so i don't know if this is a fix, don't quote me.). i also don't really get on my car right now, for the sake that it isn't running as it should be.

i'm also in the process of trying to figure out some clutch/master/slave cylinder issues...so i haven't had much money or time to expirment with much else. i've only had my DSM for 1/2 months =/

thanks for the idea though, i will definately check into it.
