My buddy and I recently took off the head of his car because there was a loud knock as though he had thrown a rod. He has a 95 gsx but it has a 6 bolt swap done to it. We got the head off and look at the valves. They seem to look fine other then being black and white from running rich and lean.
Then we looked in the cylinders and noticed there were 4 notches in the corners on the top of all the pistons as though they were hitting the valves. The valves looked fine but then I was thinking maybe the guy he bought the car from had put in pistons (it doesn affect the piston at all).
Like I said, everything seems to look fine yet there was major knocking sounds coming from the car when he tried to start it. Then it would die after like 2 seconds, just like a thrown rod would sound like. Nothing looks wrong though.
I have a bunch of pictures of the block and the head showing the cylinders and valves. I don't know it they will help but i have no idea at this point considering I didn't see anything, especialy after what I heard.
These are of the head and valves...

. It took long enough for someone to see that. This is the first time I've seen this thread and #1 looked all kinds of wrong on the head. Then I saw #1 piston sitting at the bottom when #4 was wasn't. That rust on the #4 exhaust valve is bad. Your #1 intake valves look like utter crap. I don't think they are sealing worth shit and they might be burned up now.
