Im looking at a 1998 GSX and the only way to get it into reverse is by putting it into third and then right into reverse. Im just not sure whats wrong with it (complete rebuild, just a fork) and any help is appreciated.

I'm sorry, but you posted that the transmission had been "rebuilt, but just the fork". So you had it rebuilt completely or just changed the fork?

Im sorry guys, I was in a bit of a rush to get out of the house before I posted that. I found a 98 GSX on craigslist and when I took it for a test drive is when I noticed the problem. In order for it to go into reverse without it grinding I had to put it into 3rd and then into reverse. if i tried it going from any other gear it just woudnt go in.

There hasnt been any work done to it that I know of, I just just trying to get a feel of the work that needed to be done to get it into proper working order. I wasnt sure if it would need a complete rebuild or if it might just be a bent fork that could be causing the problem.

Could be just the clutch isn't adjusted right, or bled right. Pump the peddle a few times and see if it will go in easier

I was leaning toward a clutch issue but reverse is the only gear that does it and it just seems odd to me. I thought if it was the clutch at least one other gear would do the same thing but they seem fine to me.

It may be a simple fix but I'd like to do my homework before I get into something that may end up costing me thousands to fix. Thats the only issue thats keeping me from giving him an offer so if I can get a good idea what the problem might be I may have another car in the driveway this week.

Could be the SELECT linkage is out of adjustment.
Or you got something in the way (like an IC piping set too low is a good one) that won't allow the SELECT mechanism from going up all the way with going into Reverse.
That's the cable that moves the SELECT mechanism from any of the three positions for shifting.
The unit works in pairs: Low is 1st/2nd; middle is 3rd/4th and high is 5th/Reverse

Ok guys, from all the information I've gotten I'm leaning toward it being a clutch or something just needing an adjustment rather than transmission internals. I appreciate the help and hopefully I can pick it up for the right price. Thanks
