4g64 water pump pulley and crank pulley removal

There are 4 10mm head bolts that hold the water pump/alternator pulleys on. If you look at it you will see them. The crank pulley has 4 12mm head bolts holding it on. If you look at that you will see them. Remove the bolts and remove the pulleys. You are not going to get the water pump off without first removing the timing cover, timing belt and tensioner arm.

For the water pump pulley I usually wrap the water pump belt around the pulley when the belt is off and squeeze it by hand for resistance and use a ratchet/socket with the other to break it loose. I rotate each bolt into the position needed (thinks its around 10 o'clock or so), loosen, rotate the next bolt loosen, etc.

The crank pulley I use a 1/2 drive/socket on big bolt and a 3/8 drive/extended socket for the smaller bolts, and work them against each other to break the small bolts loose. Once you get the smaller bolts off the pulley comes off.

Maybe someone else has a easier way????

For the water pump pulley bolts you just leave the alternator belt in place and it will hold the pulley from turning.

I got the crank pulley off, thanks to 1badvan. the alternator and all that is off already, so there is no doing that method, now I cant get the timing cover off due to the one bolt under the water pump pulley.

Put the power steering belt back on and than tighten it. From there put a deep well socket thru the hole in the power steering pulley on the tightening bolt. That socket will hold the pulley from turning and you will be able to loosen the bolts on the water pump pulley.

I got them both off, I had 3 of the 4 water pump pulley bolts off when my neighbor walks up, asking me what I was up 2, long story short gave me the idea to put some channel locks on the pulley to hold it in place while I break the last bolt.
