Ok, so my 4g64 in fifth gear is doing almost 4k at around 80mph this seems way off to me. My gs 4speed auto does not run this high at 80, and my truck at 80 is running about 3k or so. I do know my idle air control valve is bad and I idle at 1400 rpm in neutral. Is my iacv causing my high rpms in gear, to my knowledge the iacv only affects the cars idle in neutral. Could it be my speedometer is messed up and im going faster than its reading?

if you have an auto transmission, you could have an issue of no overdrive. shift through all the gears manually if you can (D, 3, 2, 1 or whatever the autos for mitsu has) and you should be able to distincly feel shifts to each gear. the best way to tell is if you are going down the freeway in OD (overdrive) then switch to D or 3, whatever is next down the list, and see if it changes rpm, or downshifts in other words.

if it does not change rpms when you down shift to D or 3, then im voting on a TCC solenoid malfunction.

post back and let us know.

First off he said 5th gear so that would be a manual transmission. Second, your idle air control has nothing to do with the gear ratio's in the transmission. What size tires are you running on the car? If you are running stock size tires and the clutch isn't slipping than it is totally normal. There is nothing else that could effect it.
