This is the crankshaft seal on the flywheel side of the block. Does the replacement require dropping the oil pan and removing the entire little housing behind the flyhweel, or can you just pry the little sucker out and rtv a new one in? My oil pan is not leaking and I would rather not have to replace it's gasket as well. I am in the middle of a clutch swap and I want to change everything on that side while I have the tranny off. Thanks.

Thank you.

This actually sucks but lesson learned. "Work first, ask later" That's my motto. ha
I just put on the oil pan. I honestly though the rear main seal was the only thing holding any oil back. Even looking at it. I'll pop the back bolts on the pan and reapply some gray to the pan and seal. Tomorrow

Yep, you have to drop the oil pan because the rear main seal housing bolts to the oilpan. You might be able to undo the bolts that go through the oilpan into the rear main seal housing and tap the housing out with a pry bar, but this is not recommended. Here is the procedure:

(assuming you have tranny/flywheel off)

1. undo all bolts and drop oil pan
2. remove rear main seal housing
3. install new rear main seal
4. reinstall rear main seal housing with new gasket
5. reinstall oilpan with new gasket
I think you forgot the pull the motor and transmission part? But honestly what is easier pulling the motor the transmission or both at the same time and I've seen threads where you can pull it straight out
the top by pulling your hood or dropping everything out the bottom definitely need some guidance cuz that's going to have to happen soon.

The post you quoted states its assumption that the transmission and flywheel are already removed.

I think pulling the transmission alone vs engine + transmission combined is a matter of personal preference to a degree and is dependent on the work needed and tools available. It is not necessary to remove the whole engine just to do a rear main seal, if that’s what you’re asking about.

Yes, that is what I'm asking about I do have a rear main seal leak and it's leaking like a sieve. I'm probably going to do that at a Navy hobby shop so I'll have a lift engine stands cherry pickers all kinds of crazy stuff plus my own tools I'll be taking with me So tools and a place to do it won't be the issue and I'm decent mechanic I've just never done a sideways transmission before. Correct me if I'm wrong but it says something about pulling a tranny will be easier so it looks like what I'm going to do pull the tranny clean everything new seals whatever else needs to be placed at the time like motor mounts mine are trash except the one I got one good one but buy a new set of those and go back together if you have any ideas hints suggestions throw my way I'll be more than happy to try them out thank you

I did find a few.

There were more but you can advance search for 420A rear main seal like I did.
